In an ongoing land dispute, two members of a family were shot dead and two others injured in the Badagaon area of Saharanpur district on Tuesday morning.
Dushyant and Lokesh, brothers from the village of Lukadhari, were travelling by motorcycle when four assailants, also on motorcycles, followed and then shot them at point-blank range in Chirav village. They sought refuge in a nearby basti, and were later hospitalized.
The attackers went from Chirav to Lukadhari, where they shot dead Sunil, the elder brother of Dushyant and Lokesh, on his way to the village temple. They proceed to the house of Mahaveer, a cousin, and killed him while he was walking home.
Police identified those responsible as two sets of brothers: Rinku and Vivek, Avdhesh and Ashish.
The second set of brothers are sons of Subhash, who was killed along with another of his sons, Ajay, in 2012. Subhash was cousins with Mahaveer; with Ajit, the father of Rinku and Vivek; and with Satveer, the father of the Dushyant, Lokesh, and Sunil. All those involved belong to the same Rajput family of Lukadhari, and are fighting over 12 bigha of land inherited by Subhash. Police said all the relatives were known by only first names.
Mahaveer and Satveer were named in the murder of Subhash and Ajay. To take revenge, Subhash’s and Ajit’s sons allegedly planned to kill Mahaveer, who was out on bail, along with Satveer’s sons.
Dinesh, the public relations officer of the senior superintendent of the Saharanpur police, said that the case is being registered in the Badagaon police station and that plans are being made to arrest the accused on the basis of an FIR.
