A day after Hindu Mahasabha leader ‘Sadhvi’ Deva Thakur was booked, along with her six gunmen, for murder for celebratory firing that killed a woman at a wedding, the Karnal police till Wednesday late evening were yet to arrest any of the accused.
The police have also failed to take any action against the owner of Sawitri Marriage Lawn, the venue of the function, for allowing the heavy firing despite a ban. “They are absconding but we have formed teams to arrest them and they will be arrested soon,” Karnal city police station in-charge Mohan Lal told HT.
Asked what action has been taken against the owner of the marriage palace, he said, “He has told the police that they (palace management) had informed the police when they (accused) started firing, now the police investigation is on to verify his claim.”
Sunita, 40, resident of Sector 6 in Karnal, was killed in the firing at her nephew wedding.
In a video (scroll down to watch) that has gone viral, Thakur, former vice-president of the Hindu Mahasabha, along with her bodyguards, was seen firing guns. According to the guests, misfired bullets hit four people. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.
Thakur is known for her controversial remarks against Muslims and an FIR was registered against her in Srinagar in June last year for her controversial remarks that Muslims and Christians must undergo mandatory sterilisation to restrict their population.
