Violence erupted in a village on the Palwal-Aligarh road on Tuesday after local residents spotted a truck laden with animal bones on the roadside. Dozens of people, including a deputy superintendent of police, were among those injured in stone-pelting by a mob.

The incident took place at 8.30am in Kithwari village, police said. As soon as the news spread, hundreds of people gathered at the spot and started raising slogans, demanding the arrest of the people who were transporting the bones.

As the agitated mob damaged the truck, a large contingent of police reached the spot to defuse the crisis. But, the mob turned against the police and started pelting stones at them. The police responded with a lathi-charge.

“We have taken both the driver and the conductor into custody. The samples of the bones were sent for investigation,” said Rajesh Duggal, SP Palwal. Duggal said 42 people have been arrested.

Officials said the truck was on way to Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh from Jaipur. The truck was stranded in Palwal since last night due to dense fog and the driver was about to head for Sahibabad when some people noticed that it was carrying bones

Police officials said there is no ban on transportation of such items because they was meant for the manufacture of fish fodder. Traffic on the Aligarh-Palwal road was affected for a few hours due to the incident.
