Looking at the mushrooming of great shopping malls, great job openings and the new releases of lovely mobile phones etc. makes me wonder about what real happiness is. But even the best mobile phones and the best shopping trips give happiness only for a while.
I had been needlessly plagued by unhappiness for various reasons; but when I compared my problems with those of others, my attitude changed.
I thought of the people who had no job and not even a fixed income to ensure a daily ration of food but each day I see their beaming faces in sun, storm or shower. For such people, happiness is a natural thing. They who live in close proximity to nature make one realise that happiness decreases as one loses touch with nature.
To know the real meaning of happiness, one has only to spend a few quiet moments observing the flowers and the birds around one. They are happy because they live in the present.
The sparrows that line up at my door for crumbs early in the morning eat their fill and fly away joyfully. They damn care about saving for the next day.
The stray cat that visits my room regularly comes looking for mice. Sometimes she stretches herself on my chair after a heavy meal. She is stray but warm, content and happy, always.
There are people who are happy in every situation and there are others who are unhappy in every situation. The unhappy ones are stressed out and burdened.
All religions point the way towards happiness by teaching that bonding with human beings is better than bonding with wealth and riches. And peaceful smile on one’s face comes from this realisation.
All it takes to be happy is to loosen that hold on material possessions and share a coin or a smile or do a good deed for some one.
Nature teaches and gives us warmth, light, beauty and comfort; and asks for only a few moments of our time to understand its mysteries.
