‘A global platform to share problems’

Mr TK Malhotra, President of the Automobile Association of Upper India (AAUI), a body that works closely with the government to streamline road and driving management issues was recently elected as Vice President of the Federation Internationale de l’ Automobile (FIA), Asia Pacific Region and a member of the World Council of Automobile Mobility and Tourism, Paris. He talks about his plans and the role of AAUI.

Excerpts:

Now that you are on the World Council of FIA what do you hope will be the benefits accruing to India?

I will now have a global platform to share traffic and infrastructure related problems that we face in India and to benefit from the views of international experts. My participation in various global fora will enable me to bring values to my country to promote road safety and tourism.

How do you hope to use your profile to benefit India though this prestigious nomination on the World Body?

My Mission is:-

To promote international understanding, explore mutual cooperation by exchanging expertise and benefit Indian motoring community and tourists at the domestic and international level.

Could you tell us something about your role as the president of the AAUI? How long have you been in this position?

I have been President of the AAUI since 1981 and have also served five terms as National President, Federation of Indian Automobile Associations (FIAA). I was nominated for the position of Vice President of Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT), Geneva in 1993.

What have been the highlights of your tenure as President and what are the special services that you are providing to the people of the country?

During my tenure as President, I organized a successful World Assembly of the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) in New Delhi in 1993. In the year 1988,I initiated the process to establish a driving training school to impart training on the most scientific lines.

The school equipped with bus/ truck and light motor vehicles imported simulators of Skoda Make has evaluated and developed driving skills of thousands of drivers in past many years.

I initiated a scientific study on physiological aptitude of drivers in 2002 using high-end simulators. Nearly 15000 drivers participated in the study. The institution is currently imparting driving skills to more than 80 drivers every day.

I also introduced a HIV/Aids orientation to educate truck drivers. The AAUI has a record of training more than 1, 50,000 drivers as of now.   

What are the special services you provide to motorists, road users and members?

There are several services such as:  Breakdown Assistance, Travel itinerary (Road information and Road Maps), Passport Assistance ( new/renewal), AA Road Atlas of India, Driving Training on Electronic Simulators, International Driving Permits, AA Carnet De Passages for temporary exportation of cars, Legal assistance in traffic offenses, Pollution under control certificates, AA Vehicle Inspection, Driver Placement, Road Tax Payment, Driving License Assistance, Vehicle and general Insurance benefits and loading and unloading of cars in case of transfer of residence.
