India cannot let Italy cock a snook at its legal system
With reference to the editorial An undiplomatic sleight of hand (Our Take, March 13), Italy's decision not to send back the two marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen shows Rome's scant regard for diplomatic obligations and conventions.

This act is nothing short of treachery. But one wonders why these two marines were allowed to return in the first place to their country, especially when the Kerala government opposed this.

Now that the damage is done, the government should make an all-out effort, including seeking the help of Interpol, to apprehend them and send out a strong message that no country can take India and its justice system for a ride.

The BJP must win the polls first
With reference to Rajdeep Sardesai's article It is one vs the many (Beyond The Bite, March 8), though Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi enjoys a huge fan following in the social media, the BJP's allies and people within the party will always remain wary of naming him as the party's prime ministerial candidate.

Modi's rising popularity can be attributed to the people's disillusionment with the UPA government and a serious leadership crisis in the BJP.

But, for his aspirations to materialise, the BJP has to secure enough seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and it's too premature to predict the results.

It is possible that LK Advani may emerge as a compromise candidate in the 2014 polls given that he may be more acceptable to the party's allies than Modi who still cannot shake of 2002 Gujarat riots taint.

But one cannot ignore the fact that Modi's pro-development image is boosting his popularity among the youth.
