Don’t leave the old out in the cold, tomorrow it could be you
Lalita Panicker in her article Age is not just a figure (March 29) is right in stating that geriatric care is needed for the aged, but the nation, it seems, is getting increasingly devoid of empathy. Our values certainly need a rethink. Despite our busy schedules, it is time that we develop a mechanism to ensure that the country’s old are not ignored. We must be able to provide a hospitable environment for our elderly, and most importantly, we must ensure that they feel cared for.

Beware a wolf in sheep’s clothing
The editorial A policy with few returns (Our Take, March 27) rightly highlights the perils of dealing with former militants willing to surrender. A foolproof procedure must be drawn to help reformed individuals who wish to join the mainstream, but it is essential that we keep a close eye on the often nefarious designs of our neighbours. To avoid any untoward incidents, we must first verify the identity of those coming in from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Using the garb of surrender, some anti-national elements may be pushed into India. It is essential that we be vigilant.

The Congress must move on
The report Congress: Only Rahul will become PM (March 27) reveals that the grand old party is in complete disarray. Senior Congress leaders must not thrust the country’s leadership on an ever-reluctant Rahul. Such pressure is certainly not in the interest of the nation. By saying that marriage and children will perhaps make him a ‘status-quoist’, Rahul Gandhi seems to have rejected the idea of dynasty. It is time that his party did the same.
