It’s time the BJP nurtured the wilting lotus with a new idea
With reference to the editorial Turn a paler shade of saffron (Our Take, May 20), if the BJP is not able to make use of the existing political vacuum ceded by the Congress’ corrupt and moribund functioning, it has only itself to blame. It is still torn between the RSS’ core ideology of Hindutva and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s good governance mantra. Its under-preparedness for the general elections and its lack of a clear political plank seems surprising. It is banking more on the Congress to score an own goal. It should instead start by making the right moves. The BJP must present  India a more convincing roadmap.

Beyond diplomatic niceties
With reference to the editorial Bordering on a welcome realism (Our Take, May 21), a lot has been written in the media about the visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s body language and the chemistry he shared with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during their meetings. Though several memorandums of understanding have been signed to address the growing trade deficit between the two countries, little has been done to settle festering border disputes. It is time the two nations took the bilateral talks beyond mere diplomatic niceties.

Prisoners of hostility and apathy
The editorial Locked in, not locked out (May 21) rightly concerns itself with the pitiable plight of prisoners in Indian jails. The government must tackle problems like overcrowding, the prolonged detention of undertrials and subhuman living conditions that are ailing our prisons.

Correction
In Framing the sweet nothings (The Buzz, May 21) Union housing and poverty alleviation minister Ajay Maken has been referred to as Union urban development minister. The error is regretted.
