Tendulkar has proved himself on the field, now time to get off it

Sachin Tendulkar’s 100th century lacked style. Not only did it come a year too late but he also achieved the feat against a relatively weak team like Bangladesh. What’s worse is that Tendulkar’s slow run rate cost India the match. There’s no doubt that Tendulkar is one of the best cricketers in the world. But it’s evident that of late he has been playing for himself rather than the country. He should hang up his boots while he is at the peak of his career instead of getting booted out later when his selfishness becomes a liability on the team.

They have lost the common touch

With reference to the editorial No budging this Budget (Our Take, March 17), the increase in the Income Tax limit is marginal. The revision in the Service Tax and Direct Tax Code is bad news for the aam aadmi. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, and by extension the UPA, missed a great opportunity to address the concerns of the common man, who’s reeling under inflation and corruption.

Not in the UPA’s scheme of things

Partha Mukhopadhyay in Passengers in waiting (March 17) underlines the role of the central government as an efficient facilitator in fiscal reforms. The Centre can’t wash its hands of schemes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and Aadhaar after introducing them. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee should have explained the UPA’s proposals on the implementation and running of such schemes in some more detail while presenting the Budget.
