The forthcoming hike will add fuel to the fire for the aam aadmi

This refers to the report After tax blow, get ready for fuel price hike (March 19). The aam aadmi is tackling the rail and bus fare hike and a rise in the prices of essential commodities. The hike in fuel prices will lead to an increase in the prices of all commodities. The UPA came to power espousing the cause of the aam aadmi but all its policies have ended up hurting the common man.

A down to earth approach

Sagarika Ghose in the New Amol Palekars (Bloody Mary, March 19) is right in mentioning that the low-profile campaign of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, without the typical rhetoric and playing to the gallery, went down well with the electorate. He can rightly be described as the Amol Palekar of Indian politics.

Everyone must behave sensibly

Hasmukh Adhia rightly expects the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (An open letter to Akhilesh Yadav, March 19) to let bureaucrats stay on in a job for at least three years. The bureaucrats, on the other hand, should not behave with their usual arrogance and obstinacy. They must treat both subordinates and ministers with firm politeness.

Repair the religious faultlines

Ramachandra Guha in Letting Azad win (History Matters, March 16) rightly points out that India has not witnessed any serious communal riot since 2002. The people of India are shedding their religious prejudices. But the needle of suspicion always points towards Muslim households or individuals in the event of a terror attack. The guilty must be punished but not by terrorising minority communities.
