The PM should not have promoted scam-tainted Congress leaders
This refers to the editorial A mix of youth and experience (Our Take, Oct-ober 29). The latest Cabinet reshuffle has been disappointing. It’s unfortunate that the UPA did not make the most of an opportunity to win the confidence of the people. The Congress is trying to use the reshuffle to deal with the political challenges it confronts in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. But it seems to have turned a blind eye to the various political and economic problems that the country faces today. Moreover, by promoting ministers who are facing corruption charges, the prime minister has sent out a wrong signal to the common man.

Make road safety a priority
KK Kapila’s article Indian roads are death traps (October 27) raises some important questions regarding road safety in India. Barring a few national highways, roads in the country are uneven, lack enough streetlights and have few traffic signals. This leads to accidents almost everyday. It’s high time that the government made road safety its top priority.

ASI's monumental failure
This refers to Nayanjot Lahiri’s article Hold fast to the past (October 26). It is disheartening to note that the conservation of heritage sites in the country has been reduced to a farce. Unfort-unately, the Buddhist stupa at Kanganahalli, Karnataka, is not a one-off case. Monuments like the Chikkajala Fort, Tipu Sultan’s palace in Karnataka and the historic Nagardhan Fort are in a shambles too. The State-run Archaeological Survey of India must take note of the situation and set its house in order.
