The US must now take a closer look at its gun laws
The tragic Connecticut school shooting should be enough for the US administration to revisit the gun laws in the country and restrict the use and purchase of assault weapons (18 kids among 27 killed in school shooting in US, December 14). This is not the first-of-a-kind mass shooting that the US and the world have witnessed. A gun in the hands of a deranged person is a disaster waiting to happen. Identifying the causes of mental disorder in time and treating them can prevent many violent attacks.

He did more harm than good
This refers to the report Miffed by Malik, India avoids press meet (December 15). New Delhi's refusal to have a joint press conference and issue a joint statement on the deliberations between the two sides was a welcome move as Malik's preposterous remarks equating the Babri Masjid demolition with the 26/11 Mumbai attacks were a letdown for India. His visit to India was more about buttressing his sagging popularity at home than improving bilateral relations. His outlandish statements have done little to bridge the trust deficit between with the two countries.

A very meagre food subsidy
The Annashree Yojna, under which a monthly cash subsidy of Rs. 600 will be transferred directly into the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of the senior-most women members of family, is a step in the right direction. But keeping food price inflation in mind, the amount is too meagre to manage two square meals a day for a month (The Food security scheme unveiled, December 15).
