The home minister’s comment on rape is an insult to women

This refers to the report Capital’s punishment: Anger spills over (December 24). I am not convinced by home minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s statement that the government may consider awarding the death penalty to rapists only in the rarest of rare cases. A rape is a rape and classifying it as rare and ‘ordinary’ will be an insult to every woman. All political parties should come together and formulate laws that not only mete out strict punishment to rapists but also help victims to recover from trauma.

With reference to the report Welcome to Raisina Hell (December 23), The Delhi Police’s teargassing peaceful protestors in central Delhi and beating them with lathis is really shameful. The prime minister and the president should have addressed the nation when the protest started last week and assured them that the government would consider protesters’ demands and strengthen law and order in the capital. This episode proves that people can no longer trust the UPA government to keep them safe.

The UPA must keep its allies close

Pankaj Vohra in There’s no time to lose (December 22) rightly states that Narendra Modi’s victory in the recently concluded Gujarat polls will affect the UPA’s relationship with its allies. We have already seen how BSP chief Mayawati is putting pressure on the government to pass the quotas bill in Parliament. Sharad Pawar of the NCP, too, has expressed his displeasure with some decisions taken by the government. Several states are scheduled for elections in 2013. If the Congress wants to win in these states, it must keep its allies happy.
