It's time to bridge the gap between the aam aadmi and khaas aadmi
With reference to Rajdeep Sardesai's article Communication error (Beyond the bite, December 28), time and again our political class has shown that it is completely out of touch with changing social realities.

This is reflected in the way it responds to various issues like the Delhi gang rape, online freedom or the poverty index. Politicians, cutting across party lines, respond to an issue only after it has been widely reported by the media.

Even if they react, they do so to control damage and not to address the situation. Had a single leader come forward to speak to the Delhi gang rape protesters, the situation would not have gone out of control.

It is time politicians took a step forward to bridge the disconnect between the aam aadmi and the khaas aadmi.

It is appalling that while the Centre has said many times that it is ready to hold unconditional talks with the Maoists, it did not offer to talk to the protesters who were demanding better safety for women following the December 16 gang rape incident.

It's strange that politicians do door-to-door campaigning during elections but refuse to meet people when they are in distress.

Name them and shame them
Though distributing paper bags featuring drunk driving warnings at DSIIDC liquor shops is quite innovative, the government must mull over the idea of preparing a database of traffic violators, especially the ones involved in drunken driving, and make their names public as they are a threat to public safety (574 drunk drivers caught on 31st; paper bags to stop them in 2013, January 02).
