It's high time Islamabad did its bit to restore the peace process
At a time when the country needs to project a united face, the editorial A shadow of a shadow (Our Take, January 16) is flagging the BJP's leadership crisis, which is the party's internal matter, rather than focusing on its demand for concrete action against Pakistan in the wake of recent ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC). Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj's comment that India should get at least 10 heads from Pakistan if it does not return the severed head of the martyr Hemraj Singh is condemnable and demonstrates her poor choice of words. But, it does reflect the frustration of the common man over India's diplomatic bankruptcy in dealing with Pakistan. While Pakistan has been bleeding India with a thousand cuts with impunity, we just talk about confidence-building measures. It's time we realised that peace is a two-way street and it can only be restored when Pakistan does its bit.

There's no doubt that the BJP's call for armed action against Pakistan reflects poorly on the party. Token knee-jerk reactions will not help resolve historical and political issues, rather they will reduce them into a slugfest. The BJP must realise that a democracy has no room for eye-for-an-eye tactics.

A legacy we must preserve
With reference to Gopalkrishna Gandhi's article Regal relics of the Raj (Incidentally, January 12), it is sad that many British-era monuments are either lying neglected or have fallen prey to encroachments. The way we treat monuments today will decide what legacy we leave behind for our next generation.
