BCCI vs Lodha Committee: Make or break for Indian cricket bosses today

The stand-off between the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Justice Lodha Committee is likely to come to a head at the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for 2 pm on Monday

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) top brass is braced for the Supreme Court verdict after refusing to accept the key directives for reforms spelt out by the court-appointed Justice RM Lodha Committee.

The BCCI opposition is on three recommendations, the age cap of 70, cooling-off period of three years between terms, and the one state, one vote rule. Ahead of the SC hearing, HT lists 10 latest developments in the stand-off.

1) On November 21, the Lodha panel in its third status report proposes to the Supreme Court that office-bearers of BCCI and state units who do not meet the committee’s eligibility criteria be disqualified and former union home secretary, GK Pillai, appointed as observer. In an SGM on Friday, BCCI reiterates opposition by all but three state units to key admin reforms suggested by the panel.

2) The October 21 Supreme Court order places curbs on expenses by the Board and state units unless they pledge to implement the Lodha report in full.

3) On October 18, the court adjourns hearing of the BCCI review petition filed in August challenging the July 18 order that approved the Lodha panel recommendations.

4) On October 17, The Supreme Court reserves order on the Lodha Committee’s status report that recommended that the BCCI office-bearers be superseded.

5) On October 15, BCCI and its units cite ‘practical difficulties’ in implementing the Lodha Committee directives. None of the recommendations are passed with two-thirds majority.

8) On October 3, Lodha committe asks Yes Bank and Bank of Maharashtra not to disburse funds from BCCI accounts to state units, triggering a row.

9) On September 30, BCCI misses the first deadline set by Lodha panel to adopt the Memorandum of Association and rules. Its SGM is pushed to October 1 in which BCCI fails to implement key reforms.

10) On September 28, Lodha committee puts pressure on BCCI by asking the Supreme Court to ‘supersede’ the board’s top brass with ‘immediate effect’ because its officials have not complied with the timelines set by the committee.
