A betting racket on the T-20 league was busted in Varanasi on late Saturday and ten people were arrested, police said.
The arrests were made from Chowk area of the city after a tip off from a police informer. While the gang leader of the betting syndicate, Mahendra Singh, managed to give the police a slip, eight others were arrested.
Varanasi senior superintendent of police Ajay Kumar Mishra said that two “conduits” Aditya and Anshuman Agrawal, along with 8 other gang members, were arrested by the Varanasi crime branch.
“The people arrested have deep betting roots and were acting at the behest of bookies from Mumbai and Delhi,” he informed further.
The crime branch sleuths also seized three computers, a laptop, 30 cellphones and Rs6.4 lakh from the betting den. Mahendra Singh was working as local agent for the IPL bookies, police officials said, adding special teams are on his trail.
On May 16, the Delhi police arrested S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan bringing to light the on-going spot-fixing in the T-20 tournament.
