While Mahendra Singh Dhoni recluses himself from giving any interviews to the media, the biopic on India’s most successful captain promises to give an insight into his career.
Dhoni, no doubt had a great team to lead, but he also had the onus of phasing out some of his legendary teammates at certain stage.
The movie trailer, which was released on Thursday here, touches upon Dhoni’s take on three of his senior teammates who did not fit in his scheme of things in the one-day team.
In the trailer, Sushant Singh Rajput, who plays Dhoni in the movie, has joined the national selection panel via video conference where the captain takes objection on the selection of three senior cricketers.
“They don’t fit into my team,” the skipper told the selectors in the meeting.
To this a selector remarked, “He is trying to remove the people who promoted him so much. Looks like this guy is not going to spare anyone,” a selector said in the trailer.
The skipper shot back: “Sir, we are all national servants and we are all doing national duty.”
HT has learnt that the original script had Dhoni objecting to selection of only one player but it was later “tweaked” to create confusion over the identity of that particular senior cricketer.
It is understood that the selection meeting was prior to the CB series in Australia in 2008 and Dhoni led the team which included seniors like Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.
While Ganguly retired in 2008, Laxman and Dravid hanged their boots in 2012. Tendulkar bid adieu in 2013. Sehwag continued playing till 2015 and Gambhir is still in wilderness after last representing India in 2013.
That leaves the question: who were the seniors Dhoni wanted out of his team?
