They had barely played Twenty20 cricket. But MS Dhoni led a squad with a number of players from small towns to victory in the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa two years back.

On Monday, the selectors gave Dhoni virtually the same crew. Today, if the IPL is anything to go by, India’s youngsters can hold their own against the best in the world .

Only Matthew Hayden has more runs than Suresh Raina. Of the top 11 IPL-II wicket takers, only two spots go to non-Indians (Yusuf Abdulla and Lasith Malinga) with RP Singh leading the charge and Pragyan Ojha not far behind.

The last World Cup's run began in oblivion and culminated in that famous tickertape parade in Mumbai, where unknown cricketers in an unfamiliar format became national heroes.

This year Dhoni's boys aren't quite favourites, but they're not far off the top.

While the public is enjoying watching their players strut their stuff as Shah Rukh Khan's Knight Riders or Vijay Mallya's Royal Challengers, it will be an altogether different ball game when these eleven stars come together in Indian colours as defending world champions.
