The Indian cricket board restructured the domestic schedule last year to revamp premier tournaments like Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and NKP Salve Challenger Trophy.

However, the move could go in vain as the Champions League T20, is set to take some sheen off the domestic events. With dates of CLT20 clashing with both the Challenger Trophy and Duleep Trophy, many Indian stars are likely to give these domestic tournaments a miss this year.

While the CLT20 will be held in the country between September 17 and October 6, the Challenger Trophy will be organised from September 26 to 29 and Duleep Trophy between October 3 and 17.

Three Indian teams — Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings — will feature in the main round matches while the fourth, Sunrisers Hyderabad, will play in the qualifying rounds.

The scenario was a bit different last year, though not the ideal, with only the dates of CLT20 and Duleep Trophy clashing, thus giving an opportunity for the bigger names to feature in the Challenger Trophy. But the Challenger Trophy looks sure to be affected this time.

Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Pragyan Ojha, Ajinkya Rahane and other big names lit the Challenger Trophy last year with their dazzling show. But this time they would not get the opportunity as they would be playing for their franchises in the CLT20.

“The period from September is kept aside by the ICC, wherein no international tournaments are scheduled as the CLT20 involves teams from nearly every cricket playing country, so moving the tournament around is not an option,” said a top BCCI official.
