Playing for the country should always take precedence over the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), retired Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist said on Friday.

Asked about the board-player row involving Sri Lankan paceman Lasith Malinga and West Indies opener Chris Gayle, the Kings XI Punjab skipper told reporters: "The country must always be first.

IPL is an Indian domestic competition…" Gilchrist, however, added that it is for the individuals and the Indian cricket board to work it out."
