The association between the Indian Premier League and South Africa is in Cape Town to stay. Though no one is forthcoming on how the alliance with the Rainbow Nation will be taken forward, as of now, South African players in the IPL are pitching for “solid” ties between the franchises and domestic teams.
Graeme Smith had facilitated a pact between Rajasthan Royals and Nashua Cape Cobras and now the Delhi Daredevils have gone ahead and entered into a contract with the Nashua Titans, a top South African side which boasts of national players like De Villiers, the Morkel brothers (Morne and Albie), Dale Steyn and Paul Harris. Though neither party was willing to divulge the details, an official statement is expected soon.
A source in the Daredevils camp said: “It was AB de Villiers who acted as a bridge between the two teams. He enjoys the image of a complete team man and the players and officials pay heed to his suggestions.”
The “cricketing association” includes knowledge sharing among coaches and players. The Titans are expected to come to Delhi and the Daredevils will return the favour by playing matches at the Titans’ headquarters, the Supersport Park in Centurion. The tours will be good exposure trips for players who have not played at the international level.
