The Delhi Ranji conditioning camp kicked off at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Wednesday with some of the big names conspicuous by their absence.

While Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma, Rajat Bhatia, Chetanya Nanda, Aditya Jain and Sunny Sehrawat skipped the opening day, Mithun Manhas only came for the second session.

It is learnt that Sehwag could not come for the camp as he is in Bangalore while, Gambhir and Ishant took leave due to other engagements.

“They (Gambhir and Ishant) had some prior commitments and had informed me earlier,” DDCA vice-president and selection committee chairman Chetan Chauhan told the Hindustan Times.

Chauhan, who was present at the Kotla, insisted that the recent differences with the DDCA were not the reason for their absence.

“Sehwag is out of town and so is Ishant (he is shooting for an ad in Kochi). So, they could not come today,” he said. Besides, he said that Bhatia is in England, Nanda in Bangalore for the NCA camp and Jain out of station.

Speaking to HT from Bangalore, Nanda said: “I will join the camp from day after (Friday) as I am here in the NCA. I am eagerly waiting to check out the refurbished Kotla,” he added.
