Dhoni’s unusual moment of silence stumps everyone

It’s been only two days since Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket but, for some of his teammates, the whole experience of the skipper suddenly announcing his retirement hasn’t sunk in yet.
Narrating the turn of events just before Dhoni stepped in to bat on that afternoon, a team member sensed something unusual in the captain’s demeanour.
“He was unusually silent at that time...just before the fall of the second wicket. We have never seen him so quiet and self-occupied. He didn’t speak to anyone and seemed lost in thoughts...that was something really exceptional,” said the member of the team.
Another instance which looked quite odd was when Dhoni took out a stump the moment the match ended in a draw and soon started shaking hands with the Australian players.
“It was something we could not understand...taking out a stump in a drawn match. In fact, one of the teammates joked that, perhaps, Dhoni had unmindfully done it out of habit,” said the team member.
Recounting the sequence of events that followed soon after, he said that Dhoni finished his post-match presentation then immediately spoke to BCCI officials and ensured the media did not know about his decision before he had told his teammates.
‘Shocked and stunned’
“He wanted to tell us first. When he called us together, we thought, maybe, he would discuss the match, which he normally doesn’t do. But the moment he said he was quitting, honestly, none of us had any idea about it. We were shocked and stunned. We really couldn’t make out what had happened. He, for a change, got really emotional,” said the team member.
Ever since announcing his retirement, Dhoni is keeping himself busy with normal activities, which he often does on tours, like eating out, watching New Year celebrations in Sydney and talking to teammates, except that he skipped the Australian Prime Minister’s invitation for high tea on Thursday afternoon.
Though the team management is maintaining that Dhoni will remain with the team till the ODI tri-series and would relax by visiting a few places, it is still not confirmed whether he would visit India briefly and join the team again before the start of the tri-series.
