It seems like a crisis situation for the three teams playing the Duleep Trophy, as out of the 45 players, 14 have been named in the India A squad to play two four-day games against New Zealand A at Vijayawada later this month.
The Indian cricket board on Sunday named India Green’s Karun Nair as captain of India A for the matches to be played from September 23 to 26 and September 30 to October 3.
Besides Nair, Priyank Panchal, Ravi Samarth, Sudip Chatterjee, Ankit Bawne, keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, K Gowtham, Navdeep Saini, Mohd Siraj, Ankit Rajpoot and Shahbaz Nadeem will also be missing if their sides make it to the final.
“What happens if we make it to the final of the Duleep Trophy (from September 25 to 29)…we will be banking on new faces and notching up performances like we had in the tie which concluded today would be difficult,” a source associated with a Duleep Trophy team told Hindustan Times on Sunday.
Both India Red and India Green, after finishing their game here, will move to Kanpur to play the remaining two matches at the Green Park. India Red will take on the Suresh Raina-led India Blue from September 13 to 16, before India Blue play the last league match against India Green from September 19-22, also in Kanpur.
“We could miss quite a few players for the third league game as well, as the match finishes on Sept 22 and the game against India-A starts on Sept 23,” a former Ranji cricketer said on condition of anonymity.
“We will have all the players for the next league match, but thereafter, you need to draw a different plan for the last game. This hotchpotch will take away the charm of the Duleep Trophy,” he said.
He, however, admitted that because of this opportunity, some youngsters might get the chance to play on a bigger platform. “It could be a lottery for some new faces as they might get a chance to showcase their abilities directly in the Duleep final.”
