Shiv Kumar has been consistently producing quality wickets at the Green Park stadium here, which is administered by the Uttar Pradesh state government. The curator has been employed with the UP Sports Directorate for more than a decade now. But guess what his designation with the UP Sports Directorare is? “Electrical supervisor.”

During his tenure with the UP sports authority, Kumar’s role has changed, but his designation hasn’t.

“I was transferred to Kanpur seven years ago primarily to look after the floodlight project at the Green Park stadium,” Kumar said. “So it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me since I was passionate about preparing pitches.”

Kumar said his interest in preparing pitches goes back a long way. “It’s been 15 years since I have always been closely associated with Anand Shukla (former curator),” he said. “I learnt all the skills from him and I can produce a Test match wicket that will produce a result, like this one.”
