Faiz Faisal, Shardul Thakur: Team India’s young guns for Zimbabwe and WI tour

Rookie Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur was the lone new face in India’s Test squad for the tour of West Indies, while a young team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni was picked by the selectors for the limited-overs series in Zimbabwe.

On the other hand, Vidharbha batsman Faiz Fazal was selected as one of five uncapped players in India’s ODI and T20I squads for the tour of Zimbabwe in June. The others are spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Jayant Yadav, and batsmen Karun Nair and Mandeep Singh.

Here’s a look at the youth brigade which will be representing India :

Mandeep Singh

The Punjab middle-order batsman has played just one game for the Royal Challengers Bangalore but didn’t get to bat. Though he has played nine matches in the Ranji Trophy and scored 498 runs at 35.57 including two centuries.

Jayant Yadav

The Haryana off-spinner represented Delhi Daredevils in five games this season. He picked two wickets and scored five runs. In the domestic circuit, he played seven matches and scored 298 runs and has picked up 19 wickets.

Faiz Fazal

The Vidarbha all-rounder hasn’t played in the IPL. He represented Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy in 8 matches scoring 559 runs at an average of 39.92 including two centuries.

Rishi Dhawan

The Himachal skipper played two games in the IPL for the Kings XI Punjb and picked up two wickets. His Ranji Trophy performance consists of 307 runs and 28 wickets in 8 matches.

Jaydev Unadkat

Jaydev Unadkat has been a surprise pick. The Saurashtra left-arm seamer played just one game for Kolkata Knight Riders and conceded 49 runs in 3 overs.

Interestingly, Unadkat has been impressive as an all-rounder in the Ranji Trophy as he not only ended the season with a rich haul of 40 wickts but also scored 343 runs at an average of 38.11.

Shardul Thakur

The Mumbai pacer had taken 41 wickets in 11 matches in the Ranji Trophy. In the IPL, he was picked by Kings XI Punjab but didn’t get even a single game for the team.
