Five held in Indore for betting on English county cricket matches

A special team of Barwani Police have arrested five people, including a bookie, allegedly involved in betting on English county cricket matches in Indore.

All the five persons were involved in betting on a T20 match between Hampshire and Surrey played at Birmingham in England.

The arrests was made on late Saturday when the match was being telecast live on a TV channel, said the police.

“Acting on a tip off, a bookie Dinesh Agrawal and his brother Pawan along with three other persons Shankar, Vinod and Kamal were arrested from Agrawal’s house situated at Barwani- Rajpur road. Two laptops, 28 mobiles, a TV, Rs 10,000 in cash and a record of Rs 6 lakh betting was seized from the house,” SP Barwani RC Burra said.

“All the arrested persons, during initial investigations accepted their involvement in cricket matches including county matches,” he added.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the racket is associated with groups operating at Sendhwa, Barwani and Indore.

“An expert from cyber cell has been called upon and investigation will disclose the gravity of the case.” said Burra.

Rajpur area is infamous for gambling. People use to gamble in the fields by covering it by tents.
