Kumar Sangakkara will lead Kings XI Punjab in the third edition of the Indian Premier League. The Sri Lanka skipper replaces Yuvraj Singh, one of the icon players. On this occasion, Sangakkara spoke at length on captaincy and other issues.

Not long ago, you had said that you weren’t interested in taking over the reins of Kings XI. What made you change your mind?

I had a chat with Yuvraj and the management and it was only after that I decided it was the right time to take over the reins.

Do you think this will affect your equation with Yuvraj?

He’s a very good friend and I am sure that’s not going to change. The whole issue had been handled in a transparent manner.

How will he fit into your scheme of things?

Yuvraj remains our most important player and his not being captain will not undermine his position as a player. We know what a big match-winner he is, and we want him to play with freedom and win us as many matches as possible. Besides, he’ll be involved in planning and all strategic decisions.

Will his removal affect the team’s fan following, especially in Punjab?

Having played in India, I know the fans are attached to their teams. But given that Yuvraj is still our main player, I don’t see the change of captaincy will affect the team.

Won’t the additional responsibility overburden you, given that you are already leading your national side?

It’s going to be challenging, but I believe it can be handled. To make it workable, one needs to involve every individual in the decision-making process, make them aware of their responsibilities as individuals and team members. When that happens, the workload eases.

How are you approaching the auction on January 19?

We are looking forward to include an express fast bowler and a fast bowling all-rounder. But above all, we are looking to get hold of some talented players from India’s domestic circuit. We know how important they were in Rajasthan Royals’ triumph in the inaugural season.
