With unrest in Gujarat over the issue of reservation, Gujarat Lions may shift their matches to the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, which is already hosting two matches of the side on May 19 and 21.

“We are holding two matches here next month as Green Park is Suresh Raina-led team’s second home ground,” a source in the UP Cricket Association (UPCA) told HT on Monday. “Even if the Gujarat Lions need to conduct more matches at the venue in view of the unrest in Gujarat, we won’t have a problem.”

A team of experts will visit Kanpur to take stock of the quality of floodlights. “An official confirmation about the quality of lights will be made only after they are switched on for five hours (the full duration of the match) on Monday.”

Two UPCA teams will play friendly ties on Saturday and Sunday night to check the lighting. Modifications could be made to the VVIP pavilions where truss roofing is causing hindrance to the lighting.

IPL commissioner and UPCA secretary Rajiv Shukla confirmed on Sunday that the May 19 and 21 matches will be held at Kanpur. He said the stadium was perfect for IPL games and Rs 85 lakh had been allocated for improvement of floodlights. “Experts will be here for practice matches,” he said.

“The conduct of the (practice) matches will help us identify the shortcomings, if any, and they will be rectified before the (IPL) match.”
