Himachal are fast becoming a thorn in Delhi’s flesh. The underdogs had upset Delhi in an edge-of-the-seat thriller in a North Zone one-day match at Una in February, and, on Thursday, they again got the better of their more fancied rivals, this time in the T20 North Zone tournament.

Himachal were faced with a must-win situation after their loss to Haryana. The pressure got the best out of them and they put it across Delhi. Vikramjeet Malik and Sarandeep Singh largely orchestrated the victory.

Sent in as a pinch hitter, Malik did much more with a quickfire 48, punctuated with seven fours and a six, than his team would have expected. His knock saw the team get off the blocks in a flash, and held the run rate even when the Delhi spinners slowed down the proceedings. Contributions from Paras Dogra (31 n.o.) and Sangram Singh (42), along with Delhi’s shoddy fielding, helped Himachal reach a fighting 153.

The total, however, seemed inadequate in the face of the fierce onslaught that openers Shikhar Dhawan (21) and Farman Ahmad (43) unleashed. Ahmad, in particular, toyed with the Himachal attack and Delhi were 76 for no loss after just eight overs.

Sarandeep Singh stepped in and scalped three wickets to give his team a foothold. The batsmen lost their way after that opening stand and Himachal caught Delhi short by five runs off the target.
