Opener Shikhar Dhawan smashed a 150-ball 248 and skipper Cheteshwar Pujara struck 109 not out to carry India ‘A’ to a 39-run win over South Africa ‘A’ and into the final of the tri-series against Australia ‘A’.
The left-handed batsman dominated in a 91-run opening stand with M Vijay (40) and his 185-run partnership next up with Pujara helped pile up 433 for 3 and all but take the match away from the hosts. Dhawan’s score is the second highest score in List A matches with only England’s Alistair Brown (268) ahead.
Dhawan, who has been in tremendous form this season and will look forward to the Test tour of South Africa towards the year end, scored 162 of his runs in boundaries, at the LC de Villiers Oval in the South African capital.
However, South Africa ‘A’ stayed in the hunt as opener Reeza Hendricks responded with a 78-ball 106 and VB van Jaarsveld top-scored with 108 off 91 deliveries.
But MP paceman Ishwar Pandey took four for 76 with support from left-arm Jaydev Unadkat (2/79) to keep India in the hunt.
Brief scores: India ‘A’ 433/3 in 50 overs (S Dhawan 248, C Pujara 109*) beat South Africa ‘A’ 394 in 48.4 overs (R Hendricks 106, VB van Jaarsveld 108, I Pandey 4/76).
