Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan took five wickets to force India in this situation. On Tuesday, Muralitharan dismissed Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33) and Yuvraj Singh (52).
India's Virender Sehwag struck an aggressive 109 to notch his 20th test century before being caught by Tharanga Paranavitana at slip off seamer Chanaka Welegedara. He faced 118 balls, with 19 fours and a six.
The opener scored a double hundred at this ground when India toured here last in 2008.
