India U-19 complete perfect tour of England, clinch one-day series 5-0
India’s U-19 team, who won the two Youth Tests, completed their perfect tour of England as they won the fifth ODI by one wicket to clinch the one-day series 5-0.
India’s U-19 team ended their tour of England on a perfect note as they defeated the hosts by one wicket in the fifth and final one-dayer at County Ground in Taunton. With this win, India swept aside England 5-0 in the one-day series in addition to winning the two Youth Tests as they ended the tour without a single loss.
England U-19 won the toss and chose to bat and Liam Banks (51) strung a 87-run stand with skipper Harry Brook (49) for the second wicket. However, Rahul Chahar, who played for the Rising Pune Supergiant franchise during the 2017 Indian Premier League, picked up three quick wickets as England U-19 stumbled. Tom Lammonby tried to revive the hosts’ innings but he could not find support from the lower order.
England U-19 managed 222/9, with Chahar the pick of the bowlers with 4/63. Abhishek Sharma, the slow left-arm orthodox bowler, chipped in with 3/33 in nine economical overs.
Chasing 223, India U-19 lost Himanshu Rana cheaply but Prithvi Shaw shared a 53-run stand with Harvik Desai (44) to put them on course. Shaw, the skipper, who had scored three fifties in four innings during the youth Tests, finally slammed a fifty in the one-dayer. However, his dismissal by Liam Patterson-White stalled India and some key strikes from Henry Brookes put the hosts back in contention.
India U-19 remained on course to overhaul the target but three wickets for the addition of one run resulted in a tense finish. Kamlesh Nagarkoti (26*) held his nerve and took India U-19 past the finish line as they completed a 5-0 sweep.
The 2-0 and 5-0 scoreline highlights India U-19’s dominance in the entire tour. Shubman Gill finished as the leading run-getter in the series with 278 runs at an average of 92.6 followed by Prithvi Shaw with 160 runs at an average of 32. Anukul Roy and Rahul Chahar were the leading wicket-takers with 10 wickets each.
Brief scores: England U-19 222/9 (Liam Banks 51, Rahul Chahar 4/63) lost to India U-19 226/9 (Prithvi Shaw 52, Henry Brookes 3/57) by one wicket.
