The hard work that I have done in the last six months has been paying off now. That is very important on such wickets. I was trying to bowl very tight lines on this wicket and hope for the batsmen to make mistakes. I was trying to minimize the bad balls and the scoring opportunities.”

12:25 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav again floats onto the pads of Marsh and he whips it to the deep mid wicket fence for another boundary. Australia near 100.

11:33 hrs IST: That will be lunch. Australia will be slightly happy with their progress but Warner’s dismissal, combined with Renshaw’s illness, has resulted in India coming back into the game after a good 82-run opening stand. Australia still have an immense task in the post-lunch session.

11:30 hrs IST: Latest on Matt Renshaw is that he has an upset stomach. Indian food is not for the faint-hearted, my friends.

11:28 hrs IST: Great ball from Smith as Jadeja gets dip and turn to beat Smith who is also slightly unbalanced.

11:21 hrs IST: Virat Kohli might be looking to target the leg stump of Steven Smith as the Australian captain shuffles a lot to the off side. Australia 82/1. Catch live cricket scores here.

11:18 hrs IST: When Steve Smith walked out, Renshaw complained that he was feeling ill. Let’s hope that he is alright. Strange situation that. One ball resulted in two new batsmen coming out.

11:15 hrs IST: Steven Smith is the new batsman. He was the difference maker in the series against India in 2014/15. He is known to play pace and spin well. Will Australia’s captain step up? This is interesting. Shaun Marsh has also walked out to the middle. Renshaw has retired hurt. Don’t know what happened there.

11:13 hrs IST: WICKET! David Warner b Umesh Yadav 38, Australia 82/1.

Good length ball outside off, Warner hangs his bat out and drags it back on to the stumps.

11:09 hrs IST: Testing over again from Ashwin. Warner almost popped a catch back to the bowler and survived an LBW. Pace introduced and Umesh Yadav will be bowling for the first time. Maybe for some reverse swing.

11:06 hrs IST: Loud appeal for an LBW but not given. Ashwin gets this delivery to rip in sharply and Warner is hit on the pads. Looks close. Would have been interesting. Umpires call on impact and hitting the stumps, so since the decision was not out, Warner would have survived.

11:02 hrs IST: Another aggressive shot from Warner. He sweeps a leg side delivery to the long leg fence.

10:58 hrs IST: Jadeja errs in his length and Warner short-arm pulls him to the deep square leg fence.

10:57 hrs IST: Australia continue to tackle spin well for the moment. Warner has curbed his attacking instincts on a pitch that is very conducive to spin. A big first-innings total necessary.

10:52 hrs IST: Renshaw decides to be aggressive as he steps out to Jadeja and thwacks him over mid on for a boundary. Australia 62/0.

10:49 hrs IST: Ashwin strays onto the pads and Matt Renshaw gets a boundary to fine leg. Both Warner and Renshaw are on 25* apiece as Australia make good progress. Catch live cricket scores here.

10:43 hrs IST: The fifty-run opening partnership is up. However, there is plenty of work left to be done. One session is all it needs for a collapse to take place.

10:41 hrs IST: Change of ends for Ashwin. However, both openers are doing very well. Renshaw in particular, has chosen to buckle down and play solidly.

10:39 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja into the attack now. In 2013, he had a big fight with David Warner in Delhi and he was involved in a hostile send-off.

10:36 hrs IST: Jayant again leaks a boundary. This has not been a good start for him. Australia 44/0. Catch live cricket score here.

10:26 hrs IST: Another poor ball from Jayant. He bowls it short and Warner creams the pull shot to the deep mid wicket boundary. Renshaw, on the other hand, is watching the ball really well. Australia 35/0. Catch live cricket scores here.

10:21 hrs IST: The Australian openers are rotating the strike well. Barring one poor shot from Warner, they have played sensibly. Australia 29/0

10:05 hrs IST: Now another spinner Jayant Yadav comes in. Virat Kohli seems to be in a hurry.

10:02 hrs IST: Close very close!! Warner attempted to hit Ashwin across the line but got beaten as the ball hit his pads.

9:44 hrs IST: This is the first Test match to be played at MCA Stadium in Pune. It is the 25th Test venue of India

09:40 hrs IST: Aswhin delivery down leg is dislodged by Renshaw to bacward square boundary. Ashwin gives away five in his first over.

9:37 hrs IST: OH!! It’s Ashwin who will open the bowling along with Ishant. Spin web already?

09:35 hrs IST: Ishant makes a strong comeback on the last ball of the first over as his delivery whizzes past Renshaw. India 4/0 in 1st over.

09:31 hrs IST: Renshaw faces the first ball of the series from Ishant Sharma and it races to the third man boundary. Sharma’s full length delivery takes an edge but it is Australia who reap the benefit.

9:30 hrs IST: Openers David Warner and Matt Renshaw are in the middle.

09:24 hrs IST: India will not be too perturbed by losing the toss. During Anil Kumble’s tenure, they have taken the conditions out of the equation and have just focused on winning.

09:09 hrs IST: Here are the playing XIs of both teams

Australia: David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Shaun Marsh, Steven Smith(c), Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade(w), Mitchell Starc, Steve O’Keefe, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

India: Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma

09:00 hrs IST: Australia have won the toss and chosen to bat. Big toss to win on a crumbling pitch.

08:56 hrs IST: There is a decent covering of grass on the wicket but there are plenty of cracks. There is no firmness in the pitch. Team that wins the toss will bat first. No-brainer really.

08:50 hrs IST: In the last series played against Australia, Virat Kohli smashed four centuries Down Under and finished with an average of over 86. In the last four series, he has scored a double century. Will he make it five out of five?

08:42 hrs IST: Since 2008, Australia have lost seven consecutive Tests in India. Since 2013, they have lost nine consecutive Tests in Asia. Their horrors against spin have been well-chronicled. Heading into the series, India are clear favourites.

08:38 hrs IST: A warm welcome to the first Test between India vs Australia from Pune. Virat Kohli will be aiming to continue India’s dominant run while Australia will be hoping to turn their poor record in India around.

Australia, ranked second in the world, have lost their last nine Tests in Asia and opted to pack their squad with four specialist spin bowlers to bog down an Indian side unbeaten in their last 19 Tests.

India skipper Virat Kohli said he was not surprised that the opposition were not leaning on their traditional strength of attacking with fast bowlers.

“Coming to India, playing in summers. Wickets are meant to be dry and they are meant to turn,” Kohli said. “You will have a stronger spin bowling attack then getting six, seven fast bowlers. That is a pretty natural selection.”

India have to be watchful against Mitchell Starc. And Kohli’s know a bit about the 27-year-old paceman who played IPL with him as part of Royal Challengers Bangalore side.

Mitchell Starc was the leading wicket-taker (24) for the side on the turning pitches in Sri Lanka last year, a series in which Australia were blanked 3-0.

“He has really taken his game to the next level and that’s why he is counted among the top bowlers in world cricket and deserves to be there because he has worked really hard and the results are evident.”
