India vs England 2nd Test Day 4: R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja strikes boost IND

For 50 overs, England blocked and defended solidly against the Indian attack on a difficult pitch. However, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja got the wickets of Haseeb Hameed and Alastair Cook at the fag end of the day to put India on top. Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed batted brilliantly for 50 overs as they looked to survive. However, R Ashwin removed Hameed for 25 while Jadeja removed Cook for 54 in the final over of the day. 16:35 hrs IST: That brings to an end of what has been an enthralling day’s play. The wicket of Cook in the last over has given India the upper hand heading into day 5. Will England hold on or will India take the remaining wickets quickly? Catch all the action tomorrow.

16:30 hrs IST: WICKET! What a strike before the end of the day! Jadeja gets Cook and this will boost India on day 5.

Jadeja gets this delivery to break back in from outside off, Cook comes forward but plays down the wrong line, Jadeja appeals and the umpire raises the finger, Cook reviews but replays show that the ball was hitting leg stump and the impact was also in line, Cook and Root are both gutted.

16:23 hrs IST: Alastair Cook gets to his 53rd fifty and 8th versus India. He really loves to play in the sub-continent.

16:09 hrs IST: Alastair Cook nears his fifty. Only six overs to go for the end of the day.

16:00 hrs IST: WICKET! Oh dear! That is so unfortunate for Haseeb. Ashwin bowls the shooter and he is totally undone by it.

Ashwin lands this offbreak on middle stump and it shoots through at ankle height, Haseeb goes on the back foot and is beaten by a lack of bounce, India appeal and the umpire gives it out, Haseeb is gutted as he walks back.

Haseeb Hameed 25 (144), England 75/1, need 330 more to win.

15:53 hrs IST: Coming back to both DRS decision, it was Ashwin and Jadeja who insisted that the review should be taken.

15:49 hrs IST: Another review! This time it is R Ashwin. This delivery straightens on off stump and Cook plunges forward with bat and pad close, the ball hits the pad first and India appeal, Kohli wants the review and replays show that it is hitting off stump, but the impact is umpire’s call. India have lost both their reviews. Kohli is not amused one bit. He cannot believe it.

15:44 hrs IST: India opt for the review. It is for an LBW appeal against Alastair Cook. The ball had spun a long way and Cook had shuffled a bit, umpire Dharmasena does not give it out, replays show that the ball was hitting leg stump but since Dharmasena had ruled it not out, it stays with umpire’s call.

15:41 hrs IST: Poor over from Ashwin comes to an end. He misses his length and Haseeb capitalises on it by driving this ball past mid off for a boundary.

15:38 hrs IST: Cook suddenly ups the ante by smashing a couple of cleanly driven boundaries. He is moving closer to a solid fifty.

15:37 hrs IST: This is magnificent Test batting. Slow, grinding, attritional cricket. Takes you back to the nostalgia of the 60s, 70s.

15:29 hrs IST: Ashwin is into the attack now. Suddenly, there seems to be no assistance from the pitch at all. Both batsmen have settled in comfortably.

10:38 hrs IST: The lead has crossed 350. Till Kohli is at the crease, India will breathe easy. However, with the pitch playing it’s tricks, even this total is a big one.

10:37 hrs IST: Jadeja has decided to target Rashid as he launches a full delivery over long on for a six.

10:30 hrs IST: Drinks on the fourth day and it has been all about Stuart Broad. He has bowled with pace and generated good movement off the pitch. That legcutter has caused plenty of problems. However, Virat Kohli stll strong. Catch live scores here

10:24 hrs IST: England appeal for an LBW against Kohli but it is not given. They immediately opt for the review. Broad gets this delivery to nip back in from the angle and Kohli, who is a long way forward, looks to work it to the leg side but gets hit on the pad, replays show the ball to be clipping leg stump so the umpire’s call remains. Lucky escape for Kohli.

10:16 hrs IST: WICKET! This is not a good sign for India. Wriddhiman Saha’s poor form with the bat continues.

Rashid floats the googly and Saha plays inside the line of the delivery, gets hit on the pad and England appeal for an LBW, the umpire gives it out, Saha goes for the review but replays show that the ball was clipping leg stump, umpire’s call is the signal and the original decision stays. 10:09 hrs IST: WICKET! Broad is on fire and he has gotten Ashwin. No review this time and the batsman walks.

Good length ball angled in around off stump and it holds its line slightly, Ashwin goes for the drive and gets a faint outside edge that is taken by Bairstow. Broad gets his fourth wicket. Injury, what injury? Outstanding spell this from Broad. Catch live scores here

10:04 hrs IST: Ashwin has been given OUT LBW and he immediately reviews. Broad gets this delivery to nip back in from a good length and Ashwin is late in getting the bat down, umpire Rod Tucker gives it out but replays show that there was a big inside edge, the decision is overturned and Ashwin survives.

10:00 hrs IST: Broad is really troubling Kohli by hitting the right lengths. He is using the legcutter brilliantly and almost lured Kohli into a false stroke when the ball nippped away late.

09:58 hrs IST: Adil Rashid is into the attack and R Ashwin, who has hurt England with the ball, decides to hurt them with the bat by drilling a flighted ball down the ground for a boundary.

Superb ball from Broad. Back of a length delivery angled in and it hits the crack to straighten and kick up sharply from the deck, Rahane can only fend at it and the outside edge goes to Alastair Cook at slip.

09:42 hrs IST: Kohli is in that zone already today. Full ball from Broad and he creams a majestic drive through extra cover for a boundary.

09:40 hrs IST: Some sloppy work from England in the field already. In the last ball of Anderson’s over, Kohli taps a length ball to the off side and sets off for a quick single, the throw is at the bowler’s end and it ricochets away to long on for four additional runs. Catch live scores here

09:36 hrs IST: Anderson begins from the other end and generates good swing. A big appeal for an LBW against Ajinkya Rahane but that ball was going down the leg side.

09:33 hrs IST: India’s lead has crossed 300. Both Kohli and Rahane will be aiming for quick runs. Broad bowls a yorker to Kohli who digs it out and there is an appeal for a catch from the bowler, but the rest of the England bowlers are not interested.

09:31 hrs IST: One slip in place for Broad as he runs in. His foot injury will be scanned after the end of the match. England will be hoping that it is nothing serious.

09:28 hrs IST: The England players are warming up and it looks like Stuart Broad will open the bowling.

09:15 hrs IST: A warm welcome to day 4 of the Vizag Test between India and England. The hosts are on top in this Test match, with Virat Kohli coming close to a special feat.

The opening session of day 4 should see an exciting battle between bat and ball. Kohli and Rahane will love to extend their run while Stuart Broad and James Anderson will look to extract some reverse swing with a ball that is 34 overs old.

The 28-year-old Kohli, who hit 167 in the first innings, hit six boundaries in his unbeaten 56 and looked in no trouble on a surface which has tested all other batsmen with the turn and variable bounce on offer.

The match is already turning out to be a Kohli-Ravichandran Ashwin show.

Off-spinner Ashwin is the world’s top-ranked Test bowler at the moment and his 22nd five-wicket haul in only his 41st Test earlier helped bring an end to some stout resistance from the tourists.
