Jonny Bairstow was the key for England as his 89 helped the visitors to 268/8. It was not easy going on a difficult pitch as Jayant Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with two wickets each. Umesh Yadav also got a couple of wickets as India ended the first day on top. Relive all the action of day one between India vs England here. (SCORECARD | NEWS)

16:38 hrs IST: After the end of the day, this is what Umesh Yadav had to say.

Umesh Yadav: The ball was swinging so I just wanted to hit the right areas. Sometimes catches are dropped, but this is cricket. Sometimes your team-mates take good catches too

16:30 hrs IST: That is stumps and England end on 268/8. A very good session for India and they will be very happy. Jonny Bairstow’s 89 and his partnership with the lower order has given England hope. Jayant Yadav and Umesh Yadav were the stars on day one of the Mohali Test.

16:25 hrs IST: WICKET! Umesh strikes with the new ball. Superb delivery.

Umesh stays wide of the crease and angles in a good length ball outside off, it cuts back in off the deck and stays low, Woakes is rooted back and he plays down the wrong line, the ball crashes into off stump.

Chris Woakes b Umesh Yadav 25, England 266/8

16:20 hrs IST: Two slips and a gully in place as Mohammed Shami shares the new ball. However, Rashid is playing calmly.

16:16 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav has taken the second new ball. This will only increase the pressure on England.

16:11 hrs IST: Interesting period for England’s batsman. Only four overs remain and 18 minutes. India will bowl a couple of overs more.

16:04 hrs IST: WICKET! Jayant strikes and Bairstow reviews. Great bowling from the Haryana offie. He stays round the wicket and gets this ball to break back, Bairstow plays outside the line and gets hit on the front pad, umpire gives it out and England review, replays show it is hitting leg stump, ends a good knock from the England wicketkeeper.

15:59 hrs IST: Yet another solid partnership is developing. Can Bairstow get to a hundred on the first day? Woakes grows in confidence as he rocks back and cuts R Ashwin to the deep point fence.

Chris Woakes gave Jonny Bairstow good support in the third session of the Mohali Test. (BCCI)

15:51 hrs IST: India have not taken the second new ball and they will continue with the spinners. The tail continues to frustrate India. Maybe, Cook can reverse the batting order. Get the tail on top and the top to the bottom. One team has done it before though, almost 80 years ago.

15:44 hrs IST: Run-out appeal against Bairstow but the batsman is safely in. Wonder why did the umpire even go up. Bairstow was past the stumps when Parthiv dislodged the bails.

15:36 hrs IST: India have opted for the review against Jonny Bairstow. The original decision is NOT OUT. Bairstow plays slightly inside the line to a slider and gets hit on the front pad, India appeal but the umpire is not interested, replays show that the ball is missing leg stump, good decision.

15:31 hrs IST: With just four overs to go for the new ball, England will be cautious. But, it remains to be seen whether Kohli opts for the new cherry.

15:26 hrs IST: KL Rahul seems to be having a topsy-turvy international career. Fit for one match and injured for the next. It is not a good sign.

15:22 hrs IST: In Adelaide, South Africa have taken the lead but they have lost three wickets. However, Faf du Plessis, who loves to play at this venue is out there with Cook, who has moved to 62.

15:17hrs IST: The onus is on Bairstow to help England get a score somewhere in the region of 250-300. Catch live scores here

Ravindra Jadeja struck after Tea as he removed Jos Buttler for 43. (BCCI)

15:08hrs IST: A Shami ripper jags back and strikes Chris Woakes’ pads. Huge appeal turned down. Kohli keeping his reviews safe in the bank. Replays show it was umpire’s call on the height.

15:01hrs IST: Buttler’s dismissal came at a crucial time for the hosts. The 69-run partnership between Buttler and Bairstow may have put England in a better position, but another wicket here will put India squarely in the driver’s seat. Catch live scores here

14:58hrs IST: And gone! Flighted delivery from Jadeja, and Buttler hits it straight to Kohli. Gone for 43.

14:48 hrs IST: Buttler is closing in on his fifty. In these conditions, it has been a very good knock. Not bad for a player making a comeback.

14:42 hrs IST: Jadeja and Shami are maintaining tight lines but Buttler and Bairstow are not too perturbed.

14:37 hrs IST: Shami begins from the other end. He will be aiming to exploit the reverse swing that is on offer. Catch live scores here

14:33 hrs IST: Welcome back for the final session. Ravindra Jadeja will open the bowling. England will be aiming to continue the good work. In Adelaide, Cook has scored a fifty and South Africa are on the verge of taking the lead.

14:10 hrs IST: That will be Tea and this is England’s session. Despite the loss of Stokes, they have managed 113 runs, with Bairstow going past 50 and sharing solid partnerships with Stokes and Buttler. India’s spinners tried hard but they could not run through the lower-middle order.

14:07 hrs IST: England have crossed 200. This has been a very good session for the visitors, barring Stokes’ brain-fade

14:04 hrs IST: The partnership between Buttler and Bairstow has crossed 50. Vital stand this.

13:56 hrs IST: The move to bring Buttler in the squad in place of Ben Duckett has already worked. He is currently on 21. Just for the record, Duckett made 21 in four innings. Catch live scores here

13:54 hrs IST: England have done very well so far but Umesh is generating good reverse swing at pace. Maybe not a bad idea to get Shami at the other end. Instead of trial by spin, it can be trial by reverse.

13:46 hrs IST: Close call for Bairstow! Umesh gets this delivery to tail in late, the batsman is beaten for pace and the ball just misses the leg stump and eludes Parthiv Patel. Superb bowling. Catch live scores here

13:39 hrs IST: Jayant Yadav is into the attack. He was the one who got a lot of purchase in the morning session.

13:36 hrs IST: Bairstow and Buttler are steadying the ship for England. Ashwin is not getting that much purchase.

13:24 hrs IST: Over in Adelaide, it is dinner time and South Africa are 100/2, with Stephen Cook nearing a fifty.

13:22 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav comes into the attack. India are trying for spin at one end and pace at the other.

13:16 hrs IST: England have done well in the first hour. But, they will be disappointed with the way Stokes was dismissed.

13:05 hrs IST: Bairstow brings up his 13th fifty in Tests. It has been a solid and assured knock. He is the leading Test run-getter of 2016 for this reason. Catch live scores here

13:00 hrs IST: Pressure on Jos Buttler. He is playing his first Test since the 2015 series against Pakistan. He was undone by spin in the Middle East? Will be undone by spin in India?

Jadeja floats this delivery up and Stokes charges down the track, he does not get to the pitch of the ball and it is an easy stumping for Parthiv Patel.

Ben Stokes st Parthiv Patel b Ravindra Jadeja 29, England 144/5

12:51 hrs IST: Over in Adelaide, Hazlewood has dismissed Hashim Amla for the fifth time in five innings as South Africa trail by 42 runs.

12:48 hrs IST: Partnership between Bairstow and Stokes has gone past 50. This is a vital stand for England.

12:42 hrs IST: Bairstow uses the sweep against Ashwin. Both these batsmen are growing in confidence.

12:37 hrs IST: Ashwin comes into the attack and Bairstow greets him by going on to the back foot and punching this shortish delivery through cover for a boundary. England have moved to 130/4. Catch live scores here

12:34 hrs IST: Jadeja is not getting that much of purchase from this wicket. His line and length have also been fairly inconsistent.

Ben Stokes shared a solid partnership with Jonny Bairstow as England looked to rebuild in Mohali. (BCCI)

12:30 hrs IST: Stokes is in fine form as he drills Mohammed Shami down the ground for a boundary. This partnership is slowly helping England rebuild.

12:28 hrs IST: Meanwhile, in Adelaide, Amla and Stephen Cook have shared a fifty-plus stand that is helping South Africa regain the initiative.

12:25 hrs IST: The Stokes-Bairstow partnership is key for England. They have rescued the team in the past and they will need to do much more here. Catch live scores here

12:21 hrs IST: Bairstow grows in confidence. Jadeja tosses a delivery up but the batsman leans into the drive and caresses it to deep extra cover.

12:20 hrs IST: England have gone past 100 but the Indian bowlers are maintaining the pressure.

12:15 hrs IST: Mohammed Shami resumes from the other end. Two slips in place and he is getting some reverse swing.

Mohammad Shami picked up the wicket of Moeen Ali just before lunch on day one. (BCCI)

11:30 hrs IST: Lunch on day one and India are on top. Who would have thought that after a solid start from England and two dropped catches that Virat Kohli’s team would dominate? It has been trial by spin, not helped by poor shots. England 92/4 and already under pressure on day 1 of the Mohali Test.

11:21 hrs IST: WICKET! Another poor shot and England are tottering.

Shami comes round the wicket and angles in a short ball on middle and leg stump, Moeen attempts the hook but top edges it to fine leg, the bowler has a wry smile on his face

Moeen Ali c Vijay b Mohammed Shami 16, England 87/4

11:00 hrs IST: Bairstow and Moeen are aiming to rotate the strike on a frequent basis and not let the spinners settle. Sensible stuff as they milk 10 runs in Jayant’s fifth over. Before this over, he had figures of 4-4-0-1.

10:54 hrs IST: Over in Hamilton, things are very grim for Pakistan. In response to New Zealand’s 271, they are 68/5 with Tim Southee picking up three wickets and Neil Wagner picking up two wickets. Catch live scores here

10:50 hrs IST: Since the drinks break, England have lost two wickets and have managed just four runs in five overs. Jayant Yadav has dried up the runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin snapped up Alastair Cook for 27 after having dropped him earlier in the day. (BCCI)

10:44 hrs IST: WICKET! Ashwin strikes in his first ball. He wanted to get Cook off his own bowling. That was the plan. He has made amends for the dropped catch. Catch live scores here

Flatter delivery and it spins away from a shortish length, Cook attempts the cut but gets a thin edge to the keeper, Ashwin is pumped and India are right back in the game.

Alastair Cook c Parthiv Patel b R Ashwin 27, England 51/3

10:39 hrs IST: WICKET! Lousy shot from Root and Jayant gets a wicket.

Flatter delivery angled in and it skids through, Root hangs back and looks to play across the line but misses it and is trapped plumb. Not a good shot under the circumstances. Catch live scores here

Joe Root LBW Jayant Yadav 15, England 51/2

10:33 hrs IST: The 50 is up for England. Root and Cook are playing well and they will have to continue in this vein. Meanwhile in Adelaide, Australia have been bowled out for 383, a lead of 124.

10:31 hrs IST: Extended spell for Umesh Yadav. He stays wide of the crease and slants in a full ball on the pads, but Root watches it carefully and flicks it to the deep mid wicket fence. England 48/1. Catch live scores here

10:27 hrs IST: Jayant Yadav is into the attack. On this dry pitch, all spinners will be a handful.

10:25 hrs IST: India’s fielding is all over the place. Joe Root flicks a full ball to widish mid on and Ashwin gives chase, he dives a bit too early and ends up pushing the ball to the boundary. Happened twice this morning. One with Jadeja and now Ashwin. Not acceptable.

Haseeb Hameed was snapped up by Umesh Yadav for 9 as India struck in the 10th over. (Photo by: Deepak Malik/ BCCI/ SPORTZPICS)

10:22 hrs IST: DROPPED! The drop-catch syndrome is not letting up. Of all the simplest chances, this has to be one of them. Shami bowls a full ball on middle and Cook flicks it uppishly, but Ashwin at mid wicket spills the chance. The bowler is disappointed but Kohli is absolutely livid. He cannot believe it. Catch live scores here

10:19 hrs IST: After the wicket of Hameed, the Indians had a look at the pitch. They are a bit concerned. The batsman is very unlucky. In Vizag, he was undone by the shooter. Now in Mohali, by the lifter.

10:14 hrs IST: WICKET! Just rewards for Umesh Yadav for some persistence. This delivery kicks up from a good length on middle and off, Hameed tries to play that with soft hands but the ball thuds into the glove and lobs to gully. India have struck. Catch live scores here

Haseeb Hameed c Rahane b Umesh Yadav 9, England 32/1

10:03 hrs IST: Hameed is struggling against Umesh as he gets beaten with a legcutter. however, India’s frustration mounts as he edges a good length ball with soft hands past slip for a boundary. Catch live scores here

09:58 hrs IST: For your information, Cook’s strike-rate is over 100 in this morning session. The plan is simple. Attack the pacers and buckle down against spin as they are going to face plenty of it.

09:56 hrs IST: Umesh tries to hustle Cook with the short-pitched ball but the England skipper calmly pulls it down to fine leg where Jadeja misfields. He is not having a good time on the field

09:49 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav is posing some problems for Haseeb Hameed. He beats him with a legcutter and probes away in the channel outside off. Meanwhile, Cook is batting in fine touch as he caresses the cover drive to the boundary.

09:45 hrs IST: There is an eerie sense of deja-vu in Mohali. In 2014, with India leading the series 1-0 after the Lord’s win, Cook was dropped by Jadeja early in his innings off Pankaj Singh in Southampton. England bounced back and clinched the series 3-1. Will history repeat itself? Catch live scores here

09:42 hrs IST: Edged and Dropped! The ball bursts through Ravindra Jadeja at gully. Good length ball on middle from Shami and it holds its line, Cook tries to work it to the leg side and gets a leading edge, the ball flies through Jadeja who is late in grabbing onto it, goes to the boundary. Two balls later, Shami overpitches on the pads and Cook clips it to the mid wicket fence.

09:39 hrs IST: While things are hotting up in Mohali, over in Christchurch, Tim Southee has wrecked havoc as he has reduced Pakistan to 15/3 after New Zealand made 271.

09:36 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav to bowl at the other end. Two slips and a gully for huim as well. This pitch is really very dry. Doubt that this match will last all five days.

09:34 hrs IST: England have already made good progress. Four runs on the board in the first over. Meanwhile in Adelaide, Usman Khawaja has departed for 145 as Australia take the lead closer to 100. Catch live scores here

09:30 hrs IST: All set to begin. Mohammed Shami will open the bowling. Two slip and a gully in place. Alastair Cook on strike. First ball is a real loosener. Short and wide outside off, it hardly bounces to Parthiv. Early signs.

09:24 hrs IST: With regards to who will open with Murali Vijay, it will be Parthiv Patel, who is making a comeback into the side after eight years and is one of the senior members of the current team. Who would have thought? From being the youngest in 2002 to the most senior in 2016. Times have changed.

09:22 hrs IST: Here is a bit about Karun Nair. He shot into the limelight when he became the first batsman after 68 years to score a triple century in a Ranji Trophy final. He achieved this feat in the 2014/15 season of the Ranji Trophy against Tamil Nadu and helped Karnataka secure back-to-back titles.

Karun Nair was handed his Test cap by Sunil Gavaskar as he made his debut in the Mohali game against England. (BCCI)

09:19 hrs IST: Proud moment for Karun Nair as he got his cap from former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar.

09:14 hrs IST: Currently in world cricket, nine out of the top 10 nations are playing. New Zealand vs Pakistan, Australia vs South Africa, India vs England and the Tri-series featuring Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Odd one out, Bangladesh.

09:11 hrs IST: There is plenty of cricket action happening all over the globe. In Adelaide, Australia will be aiming to extend their advantage over South Africa while New Zealand have been bowled for 271 against Pakistan in Hamilton

09:06 hrs IST: Here are the playing XIs of both teams

England: Alastair Cook(c), Haseeb Hameed, Joe Root, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow(w), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Gareth Batty, James Anderson

India: Murali Vijay, Parthiv Patel(w), Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami

09:01 hrs IST: England have won a crucial toss and will bat. Chris Woakes and Gareth Batty replace Stuart Broad and Zafar Ansari for England. However, huge news for India. Karun Nair will make his Test debut. He will replace KL Rahul while Parthiv Patel returns after eight years.

08:56 hrs IST: Pitch report: It is a lot drier and it will assist spin as the game progresses. Crucial toss. Team that wins it will bat as the pitch will crumble.

08:55 hrs IST: There are reports emerging that KL Rahul might miss out on the Test due to injury. Karun Nair might make his debut. Waiting for the toss.

08:51 hrs IST: For India, Mohali is like what the Gabba is to Australia, Kensington Oval was to West Indies and what the National Stadium in Karachi is to Pakistan. A fortress. They have not lost a Test in 22 years at this venue. Will the trend continue?

08:50 hrs IST: A warm welcome to one and all for the third Test between India and England from Mohali. Virat Kohli’s team are 1-0 up in the five-match series and they will be aiming to extend their advantage.

The toss and the pitch will once again become the key factors in the Mohali Test. Once known to favour the quicks, the pitch in the Punjab Cricket Association stadium has lost the zip that it used to offer. England will surely face another trial by spin.

England captain Alastair Cook needs 105 to complete 11,000 Test runs. The England skipper will become the 10th batsman to complete this feat. But the visitors will need more than just a century of runs from their leader if they have to compete.

Not only Cook, Joe Root needs to fire here and prove his competence in a pressure game. A bad performance may see Virat Kohli go past him in the ICC rankings too. Kohli needs 109 runs to reach the 4,000 milestone.
