16:45 hrs IST: Speaking after the end of the day’s play, Murali Vijay says, “I did not think too much about the short-pitched deliveries. The way Virat started was fantastic and the way he ended was even more amazing. The pitch has a lot of assistance for the spinners, hopefully our bowlers can get more.”

16:35 hrs IST: That is stumps and India are on 451/7, a lead of 51 and Kohli is on 147*. It has been brilliant from the skipper and thanks to his unbeaten 87-run stand with Jayant Yadav, India are on top against England.

16:26 hrs IST: The lead has reached 50. India are slowly but surely getting into that zone of assurance.

16:21 hrs IST: Virat is having fun out there. Jayant looks to turn a sharply spinning ball on leg stump to fine leg, gets a tickle but umpire Oxenford does not spot it. England have exhausted their reviews and Kohli smiles to Jayant and signals the T-Bone sign by saying, “Review nahin hain” (No reviews left)

16:18 hrs IST: Kohli finds the boundary and now he averages 50 in all formats. Brilliant!

16:14 hrs IST: No problems for Kohli and Jayant as they extend the advantage. This partnership is nearing 100 and England cannot seem to stop them.

16:05 hrs IST: Inside-edged but safe! Moeen gets this delivery to straighten on middle stump, Jayant aims for the drive, gets an inside edge that just goes past leg stump. India 429/7, lead by 29.

16:00 hrs IST: Kohli and Jayant are calmly extending the advantage. England are running out of options. They have run out of reviews, which will not help the mood.

15:54 hrs IST: The partnership between Kohli and Jayant Yadav has gone past 50. Another solid partnership with the tail. If India can get a lead of over 100, then it will be very difficult for England to stay alive.

15:52 hrs IST: England opt for a review. It was for a catch against Jayant Yadav. Anderson gets this delivery to straighten and Jayant misses the drive, however, Real Time Snicko detects no edge. England lose a review.

15:49 hrs IST: Super stuff from Kohli. Chris Woakes slants in a good length ball outside off and Kohli leans onto the front foot and punch it to the long off fence. India 411/7, lead by 11.

15:44 hrs IST: England take the second new ball and Jayant Yadav is dropped! Joe Root puts down the catch. He is absolutely gutted. England will be having a sense of resignation.

15:42 hrs IST: England have not yet taken the new ball. One feels it is time to take it.

15:39 hrs IST: India now have the lead. Kohli is batting confidently and the pressure is right back on England.

15:32 hrs IST: Kohli continues to pile on the misery for England. India are 399/7 and are trailing England by just one run. This has been a masterclass of a knock.

15:27 hrs IST: The celebrations that took place after Kohli got to his century was mind-boggling. Take a look

15:19 hrs IST: Virat Kohli has decided to unleash his sorcery after going past his century. India are 385/7 and they trail only by 15.

Virat Kohli continued his amazing form as he notched up his 15th Test century in the Wankhede Test against England. (BCCI)

15:10 hrs IST: Coming back to the Kohli celebration, once he got to the landmark, he leapt in the air and soaked in the applause of the Wankhede faithful. He did not display too much emotion in Vizag but here, in Sachin Tendulkar’s home ground, he is jubilant. India 376/7.

15:08 hrs IST: England appeal for an LBW against Jayant Yadav. Umpire Erasmus does not give it and England review. Flatter delivery outside off, Jayant gets forward and looks to defend and gets hit on the pad, however, the ball is missing off stump. England lose a review and that has gotten the Wankhede crowd going.

15:02 hrs IST: Virat Kohli! Superman, champion, unstoppable! Gets to his 15th Test century and 3rd against England. He has also gone past 500 runs in the series, joining Sunil Gavaskar in an elite company. What a player. What a player!

Ravindra Jadeja shared a vital partnership with Virat Kohli as India came closer to England’s total. (Photo by: Deepak Malik/ BCCI/ SPORTZPICS)

14:49 hrs IST: WICKET! Ravindra Jadeja perishes but he has done his job.

Flighted delivery from Adil Rashid and Jadeja skips down the track, he miscues the lofted shot and he holes out to mid off.

Ravindra Jadeja c Jos Buttler b Adil Rashid 25, India 364/7, trail by 36 vs England.

14:45 hrs IST: Kohli and Jadeja’s partnership has crossed 50. This partnership is chipping away England’s advantage. India in a position to dictate terms.

14:42 hrs IST: Virat Kohli’s classy approach towards spin is a treat. Watches the ball to the last and then cuts Rashid to find the gap at backward point. Kohli is on 94 now and India trail by 39.

14:37 hrs IST: Pacer Jake Ball from the other end. Jadeja is quite watchful now. He is batting on 24 and the stand with Kohli is already worth 48 runs. India trail by 45.

14:35 hrs IST: No problem for Virat Kohli. He pulls a short ball from Rashid to the mid-wicket fence and goes to 88 with his 10th boundary. India 355/6 after 114 overs.

14:32 hrs IST: Adil Rashid starts after tea. Jadeja to face. And Keaton Jennings drop a difficult chance at short-square leg. This will be an interesting session.

14:09 hrs IST: That will be Tea and the match is evenly poised. India are 348/6, trailing by 52 runs. The next session will be vital.

13:57 hrs IST: Jadeja continues to slam some quick runs. Moeen drags it short and Jadeja pulls it to the deep mid wicket fence. India 342/6.

Virat Kohli continued to bat aggressively despite India losing a couple of wickets. (BCCI)

13:48 hrs IST: Kohli has decided to go on an attack mode. He employs the sweep and finds the fine leg fence. India chipping away at the lead.

13:44 hrs IST: BANG! Root drops it short and Jadeja pulls it over the ropes at deep mid wicket. These quick runs are very vital in the context of the game.

13:43 hrs IST: Dropped! That could be the turning point of the match. Rashid bowls a full and flat delivery outside off and Kohli looks to slap it down the ground, Rashid sticks out his left hand and drops it. To add insult, Kohli slams two boundaries off him. India 319/6, trail by 81.

Joe Root removed Parthiv Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin as England fought back in Mumbai. (BCCI)

13:40 hrs IST: Great way to get off the mark. Root floats a slower delivery on off stump and Jadeja dances down the track to blast it to long off for a boundary.

13:35 hrs IST: WICKET! Brilliant catch from Keaton Jennings and England are fighting back. Root has two

Flatter delivery on leg stump and Ashwin flicks it, but Keaton Jennings at short leg is quick with his reflexes and grabs hold of it, Ashwin is not walking as he feels the ball touched the helmet, third umpire is called in and the ball is miles away from the helmet, don’t know why Ashwin was even bothering to question.

Ravichandran Ashwin c Keaton Jennings b Joe Root 0, India 307/6 vs England.

13:28 hrs IST: WICKET! Parthiv Patel departs and Joe Root gets the wicket, of all people.

Flighted delivery and it holds its line, it bounces a touch more as Kohli goes for the drive and the thick edge is snapped up by Jonny Bairstow on the second attempt.

Parthiv Patel c Jonny Bairstow b Joe Root 15, India 305/5 vs England

13:21 hrs IST: Parthiv Patel helps India get to 300 as he pulls Moeen Ali to the deep mid wicket fence. Once again, the length is too short. India 300/4.

13:18 hrs IST: This pitch is starting to keep a bit low. Some balls bowled by Rashid are shooting through low.

13:16 hrs IST: Kohli continues on his merry ways. This delivery is too wide from Rashid ad Kohli lunges forward to drive it to the cover boundary. Wonderful timing.

13:12 hrs IST: Steady session so far for India. But, England have clawed their way back. India 287/4.

13:05 hrs IST: India have slowed down a bit after the wickets of Vijay and Karun Nair. However, Kohli is still hanging in there.

12:56 hrs IST: WICKET! Karun Nair falls and England are fighting back. Although, I must add, it looked very close.

Moeen floats this delivery from round the wicket and it straightens, Karun looks to defend but the ball hits the pad, England appeal but umpire Oxenford is unmoved, England review and there is no conclusive proof of an inside edge, after a long time, umpire Shamshuddin decides that there is no edge and the ball is hitting leg stump, Karun falls.

Karun Nair LBW Moeen Ali 13, India 279/4 vs England.

12:49 hrs IST: Karun Nair will be fancying a big score at the Wankhede. It was at this venue where he smashed a triple century in the Ranji Trophy final for Karnataka against Tamil Nadu in 2015 to give Karnataka the title.

12:45 hrs IST: Karun Nair is showing a lot of positive intent. He uses the reverse sweep against Moeen Ali and he finds the third man fence. India 278/3.

12:38 hrs IST: Kohli notches up his 15th fifty. He just continues to gather milestones. A fantastic effort from the skipper and India continue to consolidate their good position.

Adil Rashid got the wicket of Murali Vijay for 136 as England struck early in the second session. (Photo by: Deepak Malik/ BCCI/ SPORTZPICS)

12:31 hrs IST: Poor ball from Rashid. Short and on leg stump, Karun Nair could not have asked for anything better and he dispatches it to the deep square leg fence to get off the mark in style.

12:29 hrs IST: WICKET! Oh dear, what a way to go! Vijay is gutted and he cannot believe it.

Rashid floats a low full toss but Vijay ends up toe-ending it back to the bowler, Rashid juggles but grabs it on the second attempt, excellent knock from Vijay ends.

Murali Vijay c and b Adil Rashid 136, India 262/3 vs England.

12:26 hrs IST: Vijay continues to bat in a magnificent way. Moeen stays round the wicket and floats a tossed up delivery on middle and leg, Vijay dances down the track and gives himself room to crunch the drive past mid-off.

12:21 hrs IST: Rashid is bowling with a lot more purpose and control in the second session so far. England have been pegged back due to the inconsistency of the spinners.

12:16 hrs IST: Not only the Wankhede crowd, Ishant Sharma will also be enjoying this knock. He is not playing the Mumbai Test as he is getting married. Congratulations, Ishant.

Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay dominated the first session as India made rapid progress. (BCCI)

12:13 hrs IST: The Virat Kohli-Murali Vijay partnership has definitely gotten the crowd going in Wankhede.

12:10 hrs IST: Welcome back for the second session. Adil Rashid will start off proceedings. England face an uphill task.

11:35 hrs IST: That is lunch and it was a session of milestones for India. Vijay’s eighth hundred, Kohli’s 4000 plus 1000 runs in 2016. The net result, India are 247/2, trailing England by 153 runs.

11:32 hrs IST: The 100-run partnership is up between Vijay and Kohli. The domination continues for India.

11:27 hrs IST: India will be aiming to head into the lunch session with the loss of just one wicket. With the way these two are batting, England’s total of 400 might not be enough.

11:20 hrs IST: Vijay has been given out LBW and he reviews immediately. There is an inside edge onto the front pad and the decision will be reversed. Nothing going right for England.

11:16 hrs IST: After a flurry of milestones, a slight lull as both batsmen look to play for lunch. Vijay aims to sweep Moeen but gets a top edge that lands safely at backward square leg. India 238/2.

11:08 hrs IST: Great batting from Vijay. Anderson bowls it on a good length outside off and Vijay swings through the line to effortlessly loft it down the ground for a boundary. That bat was very straight indeed. Couple of balls later, he unfurls the pull shot and whacks it to deep square leg.

11:02 hrs IST: Milestones continue to pour in for Kohli. After 1000 runs, he gets to 4000 runs in Tests by whipping Anderson to mid wicket. He is the sixth-fastest Indian to get to the landmark. The fastest being Virender Sehwag.

Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli shared a magnificent partnership to put India in the driver’s seat on day 3. (BCCI)

10:52 hrs IST: Brilliant from Vijay. He taps Moeen to point and reaches his eighth hundred in Tests, third against England and second in this series. He continues to have a wonderful time. No weaknesses so far. India 216/2.

10:47 hrs IST: Vijay is nearing his century as he clips Anderson to mid wicket for a couple. Kohli is also closing in on 4000 Test runs. This period is the milestones period.

10:38 hrs IST: There it is! Brilliant from Kohli. He pulls a short ball from Stokes to the deep mid wicket boundary and he brings up 1000 runs in Tests in 2016. This is the first time he has achieved this feat. Well done! He is the fourth batsmen to go past 1000 in Tests in 2016, with Jonny Bairstow leading the list, along with Joe Root and Alastair Cook.

10:29 hrs IST: Drinks in the first session and the partnership between Kohli and Vijay has given India the initiative. Vijay is closing in on his ton while Kohli is on course to smash 1000 runs for the first time in a calendar year in Tests.

10:21 hrs IST: Kohli brings up the 200 for India. He is seven runs away from 1000 runs in 2016 and 13 away from 4000.

10:17 hrs IST: The fifty-run partnership is up between Vijay and Kohli. Both have played aggressive and confident cricket as India motor along at Wankhede.

10:10 hrs IST: Sublime batting from Vijay and he comes closer to his century. On a good length outside off, Vijay leans into the stroke and caresses the drive to the wide long off fence. Stokes knew he erred in length. Vijay on 93*.

10:08 hrs IST: Ben Stokes is into the attack. He can get some extra bounce from this wicket as he tends to bowl the heavy ball. India 183/2.

10:03 hrs IST: Vijay and Kohli are scoring at a brisk pace. Vijay unfurls the sweep against Moeen while Kohli creams a cover drive to the boundary. This partnership is helping India regain the initiative. Moeen is leaking runs again.

09:54 hrs IST: Kohli has gotten going with three boundaries. He looks to be in great touch. Still two slips and a gully in place. India 169/2.

09:50 hrs IST: WHAM! Vijay continues to be cautious and aggressive. He targets Moeen again as he dances down the track and launches him over long off for his third six.

09:44 hrs IST: In the air but safe! Moeen gets a bit of drift and turn in, Vijay stabs at it and gets an inside edge onto the pad, it just goes past short leg. However, the umpire gives it as leg byes.

09:41 hrs IST: Kohli gets going in style. Short delivery and rising outside off, Kohli rides the bounce and cuts it with an open face past backward point for a boundary. India 150/2.

Jake Ball struck second ball on day three as he removed Cheteshwar Pujara for 47. (Photo by: Deepak Malik/ BCCI/ SPORTZPICS)

09:33 hrs IST: WICKET! What a start to the day! Fatal misjudgment from Pujara.

Ball stays wide of the crease and angles in a back of a length delivery on off stump, it nips back in off the pitch as Pujara makes the fatal mistake of leaving it on length and the ball crashes into off stump.

Cheteshwar Pujara b Jake Ball 47, India 146/2 vs England

09:31 hrs IST: All set to begin proceedings on day 3. Murali Vijay is on strike and Jake Ball will begin proceedings. It is a steady start as Ball hits the right lengths and line.

09:25 hrs IST: Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara are now in an elite list when it comes to number of runs in a partnership. They are on top of the pile as far as Indian duos are concerned.

09:21 hrs IST: Good news to start the day. Harmanpreet Kaur, India women’s captain who recently led the team to a record sixth Asia Cup title, is all set to create history, this time for the Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League. Find out here.

09:20 hrs IST: Pujara is nearing his 12th fifty. He has a chance to capitalise on a pitch that is still good. However, according to experts, the pitch could deteriorate from the afternoon session.

09:15 hrs IST: A warm welcome to the third day of the fourth Test between India and England from Mumbai. Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara are looking in great touch and they will be aiming to consolidate their advantage.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s six-star show on Friday put Virat Kohli’s team in a good position but the onus is now on Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara, who have already put together a century stand to thwart the England bowlers. Vijay was unbeaten on 70 and Pujara on 47 not out with India on 146 for one at close on day 2, still 254 runs behind.

The ball is 52 overs old and Alastair Cook will look up to his two spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali to turn the team’s fortunes. The Wankhede wicket has been a fair one and the outcome on day 3 will almost certainly dictate how the Test pans out.
