IPL 2018: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s plans against Ambati Rayudu didn’t work - Kane Williamson

Ambati Rayudu scored 79 and 100 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. SRH captain Kane Williamson said they need to play him in a better way

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Kane Williamson acknowledged on Sunday that his side would need fresh plans against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) players Ambati Rayudu and Deepak Chahar, who once again played a key role in their second win over table-toppers in IPL 2018. (CSK V SRH HIGHLIGHTS)

While Rayudu smashed his maiden IPL ton after scoring a 37-ball 79 in the first match between the two teams, Chahar’s measly spell of 4-0-16-1 followed his excellent 4-1-15-3 in the first meet. (CSK V SRH SCORECARD)

“We do our scouting, that is for sure,” Williamson told the media after SRH lost to CSK by eight wickets at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

“I think everybody set plans for Rayudu, none of which has worked just yet. So we might have to try and think of a few more things when we come up against Chennai again. He is playing really, really well. Chennai certainly outplayed us today but it is important that we move on quickly,” Williamson said.

Williamson said CSK bowlers were helped by the swing they got for almost halfway through SRH’s innings, which was not the case when his side was bowling.

“Look, the amount of swing their bowlers were able to get certainly assisted and (helped in) how they operated. They bowled very well with it. You still have to bowl very good areas and they definitely did that. It would have been very nice if we (also) could get it swinging, something similar to what they did. They got considerable amount of swing and movement for eight or eight-and-a-half overs which made batting pretty tough initially. It certainly got a lot better. We perhaps would have liked a few more runs but I guess 180 is always a tough total to chase,” Williamson said.

“The wicket was a very good surface and Chennai batted beautifully. We could not get the ball to move. Perhaps it was just the change in conditions but they played extremely well so they deserved to win today,” he continued.

Williamson praised Rayudu for batting with freedom. “He seems to be doing it every day. The way he goes about his business, hitting the ball hard and in conventional areas. It was a great knock to watch, (even) if you were in the opposition team,” he said.

Williamson also backed SRH batsman Manish Pandey, who scored a mere five runs and also dropped MS Dhoni.

“I have mentioned how talented he is. He has come in situations which haven’t been great to bat. There have been partnership(s) or something and he has had to force the issue straightaway and we have also played on very challenging surfaces where he has made some good contributions,” he reasoned.

“Manish is a team player and goes out and tries to move his team forward. I think with that attitude we will see some good performances from him. That is the nature of the game -- you have good days and bad days but as a team you want to keep it positive and move on together,” Williamson added.
