Women’s T20 Challenge Final Highlights: Supernovas beat Velocity by four wickets

Highlights: Captain Harmanpreet Kaur struck a sensational half century as Supernovas clinched the Women’s T20 Challenge title with a four-wicket win over Velocity in a dramatic summit clash in Jaipur on Saturday. Kaur (51) produced a late onslaught on the Velocity bowlers after the Supernovas made a heavy weather of a small chase of 122. The Supernovas needed 7 runs from 4 balls to win the match after the departure of Harmanpreet Kaur. Radha Yadav held her nerve and she played a brilliant innings of 10 runs from 4 balls to help the Supernovas win the match off the last ball of the match. When the Supernovas needed one run off the last ball, Radha struck a boundary to take her team to a four-wicket win.

“In the previous game, we made a lapse by losing a heap of wickets because we were in a rush to close out the chase. So our initial aim on Thursday was to qualify for the final because we had a certain target 117 to get. So, we were asked to play accordingly. And when we got close to that target is actually when we tried to go for our shots,” Veda told reporters after the end of the match against Supernovas

Velocity’s decision to play according to the net run-rate sparked off a debate on whether the team should be playing for winning or for the net run-rate. Velocity ended up losing the match against Supernovas by 12 runs but sneaked through into the final on the basis of NRR.

Trailblazers had beaten Supernovas by 2 runs in the opening match on Monday while Velocity had defeated Trailblazers by three wickets on Wednesday. All three teams where on 2 points at the end of the league stage but Smriti Mandhana’s team crashed out on the basis of poor NRR.

Sent into bat in their must-win match, the Supernovas scored 142 for 3, thanks to 18-year-old Rodrigues’ 48-ball 77 not out and then restricted Velocity to 130 for 3 to win the final round-robin league match of the tournament. After Thursday’s result, all the three teams ended on two points each after one win by each side but Velocity and Supernovas ended with plus 0.25 and plus 0.045 net runs rates respectively while the Trailblazers secured minus 0.305.

Teenager Jemimah Rodrigues struck an unbeaten 77 to help Supernovas beat Velocity by 12 runs in the third match of the series and enter the final of the Women’s T20 Challenge on Thursday. The third team, Trailblazers, who also secured the same two points as Velocity and Supernova, finished third on the basis of net run rate.
