Leaking 30 runs in the final stages of the third ODI against Australia in Mohali seems to have come back to haunt Delhi pacer Ishant Sharma as the selectors on Tuesday dropped him from the squad scheduled to play three ODIs against the West Indies.
The selectors also dropped Vinay Kumar from the squad that played Australia in the seven-match series recently.
Mumbai’s Dhawal Kulkarni and Haryana’s Mohit Sharma have replaced the duo.
Earlier, the selectors retained Ishant Sharma in the Test squad much to the surprise of experts and fans alike. But the recent axing might sound the alarm bell for the Delhi lad, especially with Mohammad Shami making a fairy tale debut in the Kolkata Test.
India will play the West Indies in the three-match series on November 21, 24 and 27 in Kochi, Visakhapatnam and Kanpur respectively.
Kulkarni was last included in the national squad in 2009 for a Test series against New Zealand while Mohit made a dream debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo during the fourth ODI in August this year.
Like the IPL, Mohit was entrusted with the new ball by stand-in captain Virat Kohli in Zimbabwe and he didn’t disappoint. He claimed two wickets in the match that also earned him man-of-the-match award.
The Haryana pacer was dropped after the Zimbabwe tour but he carried his good form in the Champions League T20 and Ranji Trophy.
Unlike Mohit, Kulkarni didn’t get an opportunity to don the whites during the New Zealand tour. The medium pacer however continued to shine for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy ever since his debut in 2008, when he was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 42 scalps.
He has also been a regular with the Mumbai Indians since the inaugural IPL season.
Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ambati Rayudu, Amit Mishra, Jaydev Unadkat, Dhawal Kulkarni, Mohit Sharma
