Bairstow, who was dropped on 11, survived by the narrowest of margins again on 56 as the tracking tool showed the centre of the ball was millimeters outside the line running down the middle of the right-handed batsman’s leg stump, cricket.com.au reported.

However, the DRS rule is likely to get changed under a recommendation from the ICC’s cricket committee.

The batsman would have been dismissed under the new rules and it would have left England reeling at 182-6. The tourists had also lost one of their two reviews as a result of the unsuccessful challenge.

“High time the ICC got rid of this umpires call. If the ball is hitting the stumps it should be out on review regardless of umps decision,” Sangakkara wrote on Twitter. “With The Umpire’s call technology is used as an excuse for the umpire making a mistake. Technology should ensure the correct decision’s made.”

“If the umpire wants a comfort zone give him a margin of 20%. If anything more of the ball is hitting it his decision can be overturned.

“The result of a review should not be ambiguous. We can’t say it’s hitting the stumps but we give the benefit of the doubt to the umpire.”

Bairstow eventually went on to make an unbeaten 167 as England finished their innings at 416, which further dented the tourists’ hopes of making a comeback in the series.
