After stumps, Shakib expressed his satisfaction about what Bangladesh had achieved on Day 3.

“Obviously it wasn’t easy, Umesh was bowling especially well, moving the ball both ways. I played my shots, it was a good wicket and I felt once you get set it would be difficult for the bowlers to get wickets. Would have been nice to get a hundred, but Mushfiqur played well and Mehedi got his first fifty as well,” he said.

“It’s my natural game and I don’t change myself [his getting out giving a catch to mid-on] There will be criticism, but I would love to contribute to the team in my way. Mushfiqur applied himself brilliantly, survived the first 20-30 balls and hit the bad balls away too.”

Bangladesh finished day two on 41 for one in reply to India’s huge first innings total of 687-6 declared, which it racked up in just five sessions. Tamim Iqbal was batting on 24 at stumps and Mominul Haque was on one.

Bangladesh lost Soumya Sarkar (15) shortly before stumps after India reviewed the original not-out decision to get the opener dismissed caught-behind off Umesh Yadav’s bowling.

Indian bowlers have the runs to back them up and skipper Virat Kohli will not be afraid to give his slow bowlers a longer rope and purchase wickets on a wicket that is still excellent for batting. For Bangladesh, temperament will be key.

Earlier, five of India’s top six batsmen registered 80-plus scores as the hosts became the first team to post 600-plus totals in three consecutive Tests.

Skipper Virat Kohli led by example, hitting 204 to follow his double centuries against West Indies, New Zealand and England in the last seven months.
