Former test paceman Craig McDermott has been named as bowling coach of the Australian cricket team.

Cricket Australia said on Thursday that McDermott, who took 291 wickets at an average of 28.63 in 71 tests, replaces Troy Cooley in the role after Cooley became the Centre of Excellence head coach following 2010's Ashes loss to England.

The 46-year-old McDermott, who retired in 1996, was considered a front-runner for the job after taking on a mentoring role with Australia's fast bowlers during the recent one-day tour of Bangladesh.

Former test opener Justin Langer was reappointed in the role of assistant coach for 12 months.
