Indian selectors conveyed their disappointment to skipper MS Dhoni after the Test series defeat against England, indicating his leadership in the longest format is under review, a report said on Thursday.
The selectors reportedly asked Dhoni to give them a plan for the 2015 World Cup, with the report suggesting that Dhoni keeping the captaincy could well depend on India’s showing in the ongoing limited-over series against Pakistan, the NDTV channel said, quoting sources.
Dhoni is already under pressure after the Test series routs in England and Australia. The loss to England, the first Test series reverse at home in eight years, has only added to the clamour that he be replaced by Virat Kohli.
The report said the selectors were keen to put in place a blue-print to ensure India successfully defend the trophy they won last year at home.
Duncan Fletcher continuing as coach has also been thrown into some doubt with the channel, quoting unnamed sources, saying his contract may not be extended when it comes up for renewal in March.
Dhoni has come under intense scrutiny and also faced criticism for leaving out off-spinner R Ashwin for the first Twenty20 in Bangalore on Tuesday, which India lost by five wickets.
Former skipper Sunil Gavaskar has been among the experts who have backed Kohli to take over captaincy. Gavaskar feels Virat can have the kind of impact Tiger Pataudi had after he was made the captain at 21.
