Mumbai IPL team go down fighting

A late burst by left-hander Abhishek Nayar wasn't enough for the Mumbai team.

Joginder Sharma came in to bowl the final over and was hit for a boundary on the first ball, to make it 15 runs from 5 balls. He then smashes Sharma for another boundary this time in the cover region. Joginder Sharma then bowled a no-ball to give Mumbai a free hit as they needed 9 runs of 4 balls. Ashish Nehra misses the free hit and also is a dot ball, he then takes a single of the next ball as Mumbai needed 8 of 2 balls. Sharma holds his nerve to make it a dot ball, making it 8 to win of the final ball. Nayar could only manage a single of the final ball as Chennai beat Mumbai by 6 runs.

Harbhajan managed to steals a double of the first ball of the 19th over. Murali was also under a lot of pressure to keep Harbhajan quite. Singh then scores a single to give the strike back to Nayar. Nayar then scores another single to give the strike back to Harbhajan. Singh then hit him for a boundary on the next ball to take Mumbai just 20 runs away to the target. Harbhajan then hits a skier, only to hold out in the long on region. Nayar then took a single of the last ball to keeo strike in the last over, in which they needed 19 runs.

Jacob Oram was then brought back into the attack and started with two dot balls, but Harbhajan then hit him for a big six over long on and then another over long off for another massive hit. He went for another hit but couldnt connect this time. He ends the over with a single. Mumbai 181/6 after 18 overs.

Amarnath continued the attack as he bowls a dot ball to Harbhajan Singh. Singh then hita him for a massive six over long-off and then digs out a good yorker to steal a single. Harbhajan also hurt his ankle and required treatment for it. Nayar then scored two successive boundaries of Amarnath. He then smashed another six of the final ball of the over. Mumbai 168/6 after 17 overs.

Murali came back into the attack, as Nayar played a single of the first ball. Khote then clobbered a huge six of the next ball of Murali. Khote again went for a big hit but didnt connect well this time and was hold out in the long on region. Nayar then swept another boundary. He then took another single to give the strike to the new man Harbhajan Singh, who immediately got of the mark. Mumbai were 147/6 after 16 overs.

Bravo was then removed by Joginder Sharma, as he was taken by Jacob Oram in the deep by a spectucular catch. Youngster Musavir Khote came into the middle, with his team struggling. Khote got of the mark hitting straight down the track. Nayar then played a single of the next ball. Sharma ended the over with another dot ball. Mumbai 134/5 after 15 overs.

Amarnath then continued the attack and he started with a dot ball to add pressure on the Mumbai batsman. Nayar then got a boundary of the next ball. Nayar then got a single that was converted into five runs, courtsey an over throw. Bravo then scored two consecuitve boundaries of Amarnath. Bravo then finished the over with three runs to take the score to 130/4 after 14 overs.

Murali continued the attack as he was finding it difficult to grip the bowl. He was greeted with a massive six by Bravo and then took a single of the next ball. Nayar then took another single to give the strike back to Bravo. He again went for another big one but he only got a single. Nayar then took another single of the final ball and after 13overs Mumbai 110/4.

Amarnath then continued into the attack and kept perfect line and length as Bravo played a dot ball and then flicked the ball for a single. Pollock then cut a ball over the point region for a massive six. Amarnath then took revenge on the next ball as he cleaned him up on the next ball. Abhishek Nayar the young left hander came into join Bravo in the middle. He was off the mark from the first ball and Bravo finished the over with another single. Mumbai 99/4 after 12 overs.

Murali then came into the attack and immediately looked in some trouble as he couldnt grip the ball due to the dew factor. He bowled three consecutive wides. Pollock then played a single of the next ball and Bravo then stirred the ball down to fine leg via leg bye. Bravo then took another single of the next ball. Murali then finished the over with a dot ball. Mumbai were 90/3 after 11 overs.

Robin was turning on the chase for the Mumbai team as he smashed a boundary of the first ball of the tenth over. Sharma replied back with vengence, as he bowled Robin, to add to Mumbai's miseries. He was replaced by the West-Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. He immediately got of the mark as he stirred the ball to the long off area. Pollock kept the strike with another single of the final bowl. Mumbai were 83/3 after 10 overs.

Amarnath was then brought into the attack by Dhoni as was greeted with a boundary by Robin for a boundary, who is looking to smash every ball out of the ground. He then added three more singles of the final balls of the over. Mumbai were 75/2 after nine overs.

Gony continued his spell as Robin played a single of the first ball. Gony then bowled a no-ball that was quite high. Pollock then took another single to give Robin the strike. Gony bowled an excellent yorker to be played for a single by Robin. Pollock added another single to the total. Robin then sliced a ball to the third man region and then finished the over with another single.

Joginder Sharma was the new bowler in the attack, as Pollock pulled him for just a single. Robin then took a single of the next ball to keep the score moving. Pollck also took a single of the next ball. Robin then played a dot ball as he tried to flick the ball in the deep. He then took a single of the last ball of the over. Mumbai were 57/2 after 7 overs.

Gony continued his spell and Robin tried to smash him out of the ground, but misjudged the length completely. He then tried to be too cute of the next ball as he tried to guide the ball down to third man but missed it completely. Robin then took a singlw of the next ball. Pollock the new man in the middle was taking his tine to settle down as he played out two dot balls. He then took a single of the last ball of the over. Mumbai 52/2 after 6 overs.

Robin then scored two boundaries of the first three balls of the next over and then smashed a six over mid on. He then played a late cut for another boundary. He ended the over with a single of the last ball. Mumbai finished the 5th over 50/2.

Gony continued to bowl the next over. He gave a single from the first ball. He was then very consistent in his line as Jayasuriya offered the full face of the bat for a dot ball. He then flicked a ball of his pads for a boundary. He then tried to pull one out of the ground but was only caught by Joginder Sharma on mid-on. Shaun Pollock came in the middle to provide some balance in the middle. Robin ended the over with a single. Mumbai 31/2 after 4 overs.

Oram continued his spell. Jayasuriya then played a single of the first ball. Robin then took another single of the next ball. Jayasuriya then smashed two consecutive boundaries and then took a couple from the next ball. He then ended the third over with a dot ball. Mumbai at 25/1.

Manpreet Gony then came shared the attack with Oram, as was glanced down the leg side by Robin Uthappa, which was given as a leg bye. Robin then played out three dot balls. He then for an ambitious cover drive on the next ball, only to find the fielder. Mumbai finished the second over 13/1.

Jacob Oram opened the bowling for the Chennai team and he started of with a dot ball. He followed it with a wide. Luke Ronche then sliced the ball to the third man region to get of the mark. Jayasuriya then smashed the ball over point for the first four of the Mumbai innings. He then took a single the next ball, before which a wide was bowled. Ronche then gave the strike back to Sanath for the last ball. A misunderstanding and a piece of brilliance by Badrinath, ran out Ronche on the final ball of the first over. Mumbai were 9/1 after the first over.

Jacob Oram came in to join Dhoni, but was not facing, as the batsmen crossed. Khote came into ball the last over. Dhoni started of the last over with a huge six. Khote then got away with a ball down the leg side, only for a single. Oram the new man in, was immediately of the mark with a boundary. Oram then stole another single as the bowler missed an easy chance to run him out. Dhoni, then went for another big hit only to hold out in the deep, with a brilliant catch. Badrinath then came in and scored a couple of the last ball, to finish the innings 208/5 after 20 overs.

Ashish Nehra was then brought back into the attack, to bowl the 18th over. He started of well with a dot ball. Hayden then smashed another boundary of a no ball, which was given as the ball was a high full toss. He then played out another single of the next ball. Dhoni then played an amazing sweep shot of his pads, for another boundary. Dhoni then got another two runs of the next balls, playing a stright drive. A tired Hayden was then run out on the last ball. Chennai 194/4 after 19 overs.

Dhawal Shukla came back into the attack, but also got the same treatment as Dhoni hit him for a boundary of the first ball. He then gave the strike to Hayden, who smashed two successive boundaries and then easily took another single. Dhoni then played out a dot ball and the Chennai team finished the 18th over 182/3.

Khote continued the attack. Hayden continued the carnage, as he scored a boundary of the first ball of the over. He then took a single of the next ball to give the strike to Dhoni, who returned the favour, as he gave the strike back to Hayden with another single. Hayden, took another single of the next ball. Dhoni then stole two from the next ball. Dhoni then played a powerful straight drive that was stopped by the stumps and Dhoni took another single. Chennai were 168/3 after 17 overs.

Chennai skipper then came in the middle, to join Hayden. He was welcomed by a wide by Bravo. Dhoni then joined the party with scoring two boundaries of the next two balls. He then took a single to give the strike to Hayden, who scored another boundary as he glanced another ball to the boundary. Hayden then played his innings trademark shot, the reverse sweep, but this time for just a single. Chennai were 158/3 after 16 overs.

Another youngster Musavir Khote came into the attack as he looked to break the partnership. Raina then took a double from his first ball to bring up his own 50. He then took another single of the next ball. Hayden then played the amazing reverse sweep, and a boundary was denied by an incredible fielding effort to restrict it to a single. Raina then added another couple to the score. Raina tried to heave another ball, but wasnt able to connect. He again went for a big one, but was held out in the deep by Bravo, to end a superb innings by him. Chennai were 143/3 after 15 overs.

Abhishek Nayar came into the attack, to try and control the run fiesta and he immediately looked dangerous, as he got Hayden caught behind, only not to be given by the umpire. Hayden then took a single of the next ball. Raina then smashed another six to Nayar over mid-wicket. Nayar then made a brilliant save of his own bowling, which would go down as a dropped chance. Raina then scored another single, to give Hayden the strike. Hayden then moved to 55 after hitting a massive six to Nayar on the last ball of the 14th over, Chennai were 137/2.

Shaun Pollock then came back into the attack. Hayden then took a single of the first ball to give Raina the strike. Raina then took another single as he placed the ball to the long off region. Hayden then played an out of this world shot, as he played a reverse sweep to Pollock, all the way to the boundary. Hayden then took another single. Raina scored a boundary from the last ball, to end the over on a high. Chennai cruising at 123/2 after 13 overs.

Harbhajan Singh then went on to bowl the tenth over. Hayden took a single of the first bowl to give Raina the strike. Raina then smashed a ball for a huge six to take the score to 79/2. Raina then took another single as he placed the ball in the long-on region. Raina then gave the strike to Hayden, who took another single. Raina then ended the tenth over with another single as Chennai were 82/2.

Dwayne Bravo, the new inclusion in the side came in to bowl the ninth over. He started off with a ball wide on the off side as Raina went after it, only to see it pass to the keeper. Raina then took a single, by virtue of a leg bye. Hayden then smashed a ball straight down the ground. He then took a single of the next ball. Raina ended the over with a couple in the extra cover region. Chennai were 72/2 after nine overs.

Mumbai captain Harbhajan brought himself into the attack as his first ball was just defended by Raina. He then charged down the track, but was lucky to escape with just a single. Hayden then played another ball to deep cover and Raina then placed another ball to the long-on area to end the eight over 64/2.

Dhawal Kulakarni continued the attack as he was giving no room to the batsmen to get some scoring shots. He gave just six runs from his over, even while conciding a free hit. Chennai were 59/2 after seven overs.

Ashish Nehra continued the attack. Raina took another single from the first ball to give Hayden the strike. Nehra then bowled a wide ball as Hayden charged down the track only to see it down the leg side. Hayden then smashed another four of the next ball. He then took another single to give Raina the strike. Nehra was under the pressure as he bowled another wide down the leg side. Raina then tried to cut a short ball, but was beaten. Chennai were 53/2 after 6 overs.

Dhawal Kulkarni then replaced Shaun Pollock in the bowling change. He was right on target as he bowled two dot balls to Mike Hussey, who was trying to get his eye in. Hussey then smashed a ball over he cover region for a boundary. He again tried to charge but was bowled all over the place by Kulkarni. Suresh Raina was the new man in to replace Mike Hussey. He was immediately of the mark as the Chennai team were 40/2 after 5 overs.

Ashish Nehra then got Parthiv Patel caught behind on the first ball of his next over to bring in the last match centurion Mike Hussey to the middle. Hussey then played out to three dot balls, as he looked to get his eye in. Nehra was bowling all guns blazing as he was right on target ans Hussey played another dot ball. He finally got of the mark from the last ball, because of a sloppy misfield in the cover region. Chennnai were 35/1 after 4overs.

Pollock continued, as he continued for the third over. Starting the over with a dot ball, he was smshed for a boundary and then for a six by Hayden. He then samshed another ball to the boundary and was lucky to get away as the ball went for a boundary and after three overs Chennai were 34/0.

Ashish Nehra, started the second over. He was right on target as Hayden misjudged the first ball. He then escaped a fatal run-out to get off the mark. Nehra then bowled an unplayable ball to Patel as he missed it completely. He then got another boundary, as he edged the ball to over the first slip as the bal raced for a four. Patel then pulled another ball, but didnt time it well as the ball only reached mid-on. The next ball was then dispatched for another boundary as Mumbai were 16/0 after 2 overs

Pollock came in to bowl the first over in front an electrifying Chennai crowd as he started of with a wide, he was right on the money as the next three delieveries were dot balls. Parthiv Patel responded well on the next ball as he placed the ball beautifully in the mid-on region for the first boundary of the match. He then ended the over with another pull, that bagged him two more runs, as Chennai were 7/0 after the 1st over.

In Chennai's first home game of the IPL, it was the visitors who won the toss and opted to bowl first on a wicket that looks good for batting, but with the Chennai heat, the Mumbai captain, Harbhajan Singh reckoned that the dew factor may have an impact on Chennai's fortunes later in the night.

Chennai have gone unchanged from their team that beat Mohali earlier in the competition, while Mumbai have made a couple of changes to their eleven. Pinal Shah, who looked out of sorts against Bangalore has been replaced by spinner Vikrant Yeligati while Dwayne Bravo comes in for Dominic Thornley, who was hit on the face by a Zaheer Khan bouncer.
