Ricky Ponting struck a double century on the second day of the third Test to leave Pakistan with a Herculean task to avoid defeat. Together with Michael Clarke (166), the Australia skipper thrashed the visitors, smashing 25 boundaries in his 209-run knock.
The duo’s effort saw Australia pile up a mammoth 519. Pakistan, in reply, faltered to 94 for 4, struggling to stay alive in the contest.
The 352-run stand between Ponting and Clarke left Pakistan with little hope. They finally got the breakthrough when Danish Kaneria broke through Clarke’s defence to rattle his stumps. Ponting, however, continued to make the most.
