The national selection committee on Saturday accepted the request of five senior players and rested them for the first two games of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand starting in Guwahati on November 28.
In the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir will lead the side in the first two ODIs. Bengal wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha is in the ODI squad for the first time and set to make his debut in the 50-over format since there is no other wicketkeeper in the XIV.
"MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh were not considered due to injury concerns, which require attention and rehabilitation," said a media release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Munaf Patel is among the players to be recalled to the ODI squad apart from Yusuf Pathan.
Ashish Nehra, who has skipped the first three Ranji Trophy matches that Delhi have played so far with a back problem, is not in the side.
