Chasing a target of 268 to win, South Africa A made early inroads as India A lost openers Karun Nair (4) and Sanju Samson (12), but a 141-run stand between Shreyas Iyer and Vijay Shankar put India A in the driver’s seat. After Shankar’s dismissal, Manish Pandey put up an unbeaten 109-run stand with Iyer to take India to a victory.
India A achieved their target with 19 balls to spare, scoring 270 for three in 46.5 overs in reply to South Africa A’s total of 267 for seven in 50 overs.
Shreyas Iyer played a characteristic quickfire innings of 140, which came off 131 balls, studded with 11 boundaries and four sixes. He came on to bat at No. 3 and forged a strong partnership with Shankar, who scored a fluent 86-ball 72 with the help of five boundaries.
Vijay Shankar was dismissed at the team total of 161, and India A still had a lot to do in order to achieve a victory. India A captain Manish Pandey, who has been in a rich form, added the remaining runs with Iyer to take his team past the finish line.
Interestingly, Iyer had not even scored a fifty for India A in the series so far whereas Shankar was dismissed for a duck in the previous match.
Earlier in the match, it was a fine century from Farhaan Behardien that brought South Africa back into the contest. Sidharth Kaul’s twin strikes early on to get rid of Henry Davids (20) and Reeza Hendricks (5) put the pressure firmly on South Africa A, which compounded after Heinrich Klaasen (6) and Khaya Zondo (39) failed to bail them out.
Behardien smacked three sixes and four boundaries to score a 114-ball 101, whereas Dwaine Pretorius chipped in with a valuable 58 to give South Africa A something to bowl at.
India A pacers Shardul Thakur and Kaul shared five wickets between them, whereas Axar Patel — called into the senior side after the suspension of Ravindra Jadeja from the third Test against Sri Lanka — claimed one wicket.
Shreyas Iyer was named the Man of the Match for his splendid century, whereas Manish Pandey — with scores of 55, 41*, 86*, 93* and 32* — was named the Man of the Series.
