Former Indian Captain Kapil Dev on Wednesday said Team India should win a lot of matches if they want to be the number one in the world.
Asked to comment on the senior team's performance, Dev said the Indian cricketers have not been performing well in recent times.
''I know they haven't played well in the last few months. If they want to become number one in the world, then they have to win a lot of matches. I hope they win the one-day series against the Australians,'' he said.
He was confident that test matches would remain in world cricket in the age old format. "Test is mother of cricket" he told reporters in response to a question on 2020 generating great interest among cricket lovers.
"If a child is born in a family, people show more affection to the new born. But they do not forget the mother of the child", he explained.
He was talking to reporters after felicitating the students of the Velammal Metriculation High Secondary School in the city for their award winning achievements in international chess and karate.
Earlier, Dev advised the students to have a dream in life, be it in sports or studies for a bright future.
"Everyone must have a dream in their life. It is for you to decide, be it in sports or studies and excel in it. You have to be passionate in doing things and you will definitely succeed in your endeavour,'' he said.
